Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Report and Prospects January 2010.
River Tay Report for week ending 30th January 2010.
The second week of the Tay season was an improvement on the first week with 28 spring salmon caught, being recorded.
The river cleared on Monday on the lower river and was good on Tuesday when 11 Springers were recorded. That night the temperature went up to 5C and the river rose rapidly with the snow melt to about 7 feet at Ballathie. Fortunately the temperature dropped at the end of the week and the river settled but the salmon disappeared with only 2 recorded for Friday and Saturday. The river temperature was as high as 38C on Wednesday but dropped back to 36C by Saturday, which should be good for the coming week especially for the lower Tay.
The lower Tay dominated the catches due to the low river temperatures, which was expected. However there were exceptions with the first salmon being recorded on Loch Tay. The Falls of Dochart recorded 5 and Fish n’ Trips caught 1. Newtyle and Kercock caught 3 salmon between them but the rest all came from the lower river.
Dave Young with a beauty from the Linn Pool on the Stobhall beat.
The Linn above Stanley continues to produce for Stobhall and Taymount and just below Burnmouth has caught 3 salmon this past week.
Lovely 13 pounds springer caught at Waulkmill by John Anderson of Bathgate.
Heartening for the lower beats also is that the beats just above the tide are producing with Waulkmill, Lower Redgorton and Almondmouth all catching. Newtyle and Almondmouth shared the largest salmon of the past week with 15 pounds spring salmon respectively.
Jim Mundell with a 15 pounds springer from Newtyle, Dunkeld, Perthshire.
Many thanks for all the pictures everyone sent me of opening week spring salmon and thanks to all who have sent me their individual fishing experiences over the last season on the river. I would be most grateful if you to do the same this season by emailing stanley.fishing@ukonline.co.uk to be included in this report.
River Tay Prospects for week commencing 1st February 2010.
As of Monday the river is settled and running at a good height.
The weather is to be more settled at the start of the week through to Wednesday with a high pressure. Thursday looks milder with the possibility of heavy rain.
John Lessels with a spanking 13 pounds Tay Spring Salmon from the Catholes beat at Stanley, Perthshire, Scotland on the lower Tay.
The water temperature is 36 degrees Fahrenheit or 2 degrees Celsius meaning you have certainly to spin or fish a fly slow and deep.
With very cold water recently it is likely that most springers will have been bottled up in the lower river. However, this rise in water should encourage them to move, but with water temperatures still low they might not run that far, i.e. race through to Loch Tay. Hopefully there might be a chance of a fresh fish anywhere in the lower and middle river. There will no doubt be quite a few kelts about on many beats and possibly some later run fish which have yet to spawn. Hopefully the return to higher water conditions will see the spawning season wind up quickly but if you find such fish, please avoid gravelly areas where they might be spawning.
The river is running at a good height and cold, meaning the salmon will be running slowly and should favour the lower Tay beats.
There is good availability throughout the river so why not have a go.
As to methods, once the river settles fishing by any method will have to be slow and deep with large lures to catch the elusive Tay Springer. Harling is also a favoured method at this time of year but be warned wrap up well or it will not be a pleasant experience.
Finally you are reminded that the Tay's policy for January - May 2010 is that all spring salmon should be released, i.e. the Tay has adopted a policy of 100% catch and release for spring salmon. Spring salmon are a scarce and precious resource. Please help preserve both them and the long term future of your sport by following the recommendations.
If you have any news or pictures of catches or experiences on the Tay and you would like to share them please email me on stanley.fishing@ukonline.co.uk to be included in this report.

This was the picture at Stanley Mills today on the river Tay at Stanley, Perthshire, Scotland. This was last thing as the light was going and the Moon was in the sky.
It was a very cold day with a bitterly north wind blowing. The river was in perfect condition with a clear water and a river temperature of 37F or 2C but a dropping pressure. Jim Last is the only one to post a spring fish catch today at Waulkmill with a lovely 8 pounds springer carefully returned as all Tay springers are being returned up to the end of May in 2010.
Maybe tomorrow will bring some more catches on the Tay.

After the thaw yesterday the river was fining down and clearing as the day went on. Stobhall fared best today with 2 spring salmon but conditions should be better for tomorrow.
Dave Young with a superb 14 pounds spring salmon from the Linn Pool on the Stobhall beat of the Tay just above Stanley, Perthshire, Scotland which was caught today. A further 9 pounds spring salmon was also caught on the Stobhall beat today. Big water suits the Linn Pool in the spring along with the cold river temperature.
Aitken Head pool on the Benchil beat just below Stanley, Perthshire, Scotland today.
The river level was around 6 feet on the SEPA Ballathie site today which was a perfect height for this pool. Spring salmon would only be yards from the bank and easily covered.
This was a cracking sea liced 13 pounds spring salmon from the lower Tay beat of Waulkmill just above Perth, Scotland. John Anderson from Bathgate was the lucky anglers ably assisted by Scottish Ghillie Jim Last. The springer was caught harling on a Kynoch.

Salmon Fishing Scotland Spring 2010 on the river Tay.
Salmon Fishing Scotland Spring 2010 on the river Tay.
There was a bit of a thaw today on the Tay due to rising temperatures last night and during the day which made fishing difficult. However the wind is to come in from the north over the next few days which should cool things down again and make for good conditions. There were not so many spring salmon caught today but that should improve once the river settles again.
Jim Mundell with a cracking 15 pounds Tay spring salmon caught on the Newtyle beat at Dunkeld, Perthshire, Scotland yesterday. Jim caught his salmon harling in the boat with scottish ghillie Martin Ritchie. Thanks for the pictures Martin.
Jim Mundell returning his lovely 15 pounds springer from the Newtyle beat yesterday.
This is the largest Tay Spring Salmon of 2010 so far weighing in at 22 pounds. It was caught by John Albiston of Kellas last week at Findynate on the Upper Tay. The fish was caught on a pearly tomic on the harl under the supervision of Colin Somerville. Unfortunately it was not a good picture but you can see it was a cracking Tay Springer.

This is a video of a unique custom which happens on the Tay in Scotland because of the sheer size of the river. It is called Harling which is trolling lures behind a boat in a river and systematically covering lies within the river. Tay Ghillies acquire this skill after several years of experience holding the boat against the different currents within the river.
This was Scottish Ghillie Dave Barwick harling in the Horsey pool at Stanley, Perthshire today. They caught a Kelt in the process.

Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Report and Prospects January 2010.
Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Report and Prospects January 2010.
Weekly Report for week ending 23rd January 2010.
After all the excitement of the opening day ceremonies it was down to the real act of fishing and the first whole week of the season. I am pleased to say the river got off to a flying start with some good spring salmon landed and there was a great feeling of expectation.
The dirty water last weekend cleared making good conditions for the week, which resulted in success for some of the lower Tay beats as well as some higher beats. Very cold water meant ideal conditions for the lower river, which has not happened for many years. The river temperature was 36F or 2C which meant fishing methods of spinning and fly fishing were slow and deep.
18 salmon were reported last week with the best salmon of 22 pounds being landed by Colin Sommerville at Findynate on Monday whilst spinning.
Keith Greenwell with a cracking 12 pounds springer caught on the Linn Pool just above Stanley, Perthshire, Scotland.
Richard Greenwell also had a lovely 20 pounds Tay springer from the Stobhall beat just above Stanley fishing on the Linn Pool caught on a Devon. On Saturday there was another 20 pounds fresh spring salmon caught on Stobhall.
A few other spring salmon were caught around Stanley on the lower Tay with Bridge of Allan angler Alan McCaig catching 2 fresh springers in under half an hour from the Aitken Head pool on the Benchil beat on the Upper Scone Fishings.
Scottish ghillie George McInnes celebrated his 70th Birthday by helping Ian Tait land a lovely12 pound springer at Ballathie.
Newtyle was successful as well on the middle river with 4 salmon during the week including a 16 pound salmon on Saturday. Unfortunately the lower river was virtually unfishable on Friday and Saturday with very dirty water from rain on Thursday night, although we did give it a go on Saturday. This should clear out for Monday and make the prospects good for next week.
If you have any news or pictures of catches or experiences on the Tay and you would like to share them please email me on stanley.fishing@ukonline.co.uk to be included in this report.
Prospects for the week commencing 25th January 2010.
The river is flowing at a good height and slightly coloured on the lower river from the Isla downstream due to rain and a slight thaw. The colour should disappear with colder weather but conditions above the Islamouth mouth should be good.
The weather is to be more settled at the start of the week through to Wednesday with a high pressure.
Hopefully the water colour will improve as the week progresses to allow some sport on all beats.
Hopefully the return to higher water conditions will see the spawning season wind up quickly, but if you find such fish, please avoid gravelly areas where they might be spawning.

Finally all anglers are reminded that the Tay's policy for Catch and Release in 2010 is that we now recommend every angler should release all spring salmon to conserve stocks for the future . i.e. the Tay has adopted a policy of 100% catch and release for spring salmon. Spring salmon are a scarce and precious resource. Please help preserve both them and the long term future of your sport by following the recommendations.

If you have any news or pictures of catches or experiences on the Tay and you would like to share them please email me on stanley.fishing@ukonline.co.uk

Salmon Fishing Scotland Spring Salmon Fishing January 2010 on the River Tay.
Salmon Fishing Scotland Spring Salmon Fishing January 2010 on the River Tay.
This was ARNOT MCWHINNIE's article in the Daily Record this week on the excitement of the Tay Opening day 2010.
The old adage might be ‘never count your chickens till they’ve hatched’, but for me on the opening day of the River Tay fishing it was ‘never count your salmon till it has spawned’.
That day I had the pleasure of landing a lovely, silver springer which, when put into Benchil beat ghillie Davie Seaton’s weigh-net, tipped the scales at 12 pounds.
The fish, which grabbed a pink and white Kynoch, was duly photographed and then carefully released.
And as it strongly swam back into the middle of the river I harboured the thought that just perhaps I would be the first angler to have his name engraved twice on the coveted Redford Trophy which is awarded to the captor of the heaviest fish on every opening day.
By the time we finished that evening the ghillies’ mobile phones, which are like the jungle tom toms of the river, had failed to reveal any bigger salmon.
But, as I learned soon after, a bigger one had been caught. So it’s congratulations to Perth angler Peter Backhouse who landed a superb 16 pound hen fish on a silver Toby from the Kercock beat.
Peter, I hope you will get the same pleasure as me at having your name engraved for posterity on this magnificent trophy named in memory of one of the Tay’s great anglers, the late Ian Redford.
Ian Redford with former Scottish Ghillies Willie Laird and Callum Gillies back on Tay Opening day 1979.
As for me I had the pleasure of being awarded the Tayside Hotel Trophy awarded to the angler who catches the biggest opening day salmon locally.
Davie and his head ghillie Dave Barwick also had the pleasure of being presented with two fine bottles of whisky to celebrate the occasion.
Undoubtedly the most celebrated salmon of the new season, was netted on Monday this week by legendary Tay ghillie, George McInnes, for veteran Glasgow angler, Ian Tait.
After its capture there was a dual celebration on the river bank because not only was it the first salmon from the Ballathie beat, but it was George’s 70th birthday.
George, a former police inspector, a friend and fishing buddy of mine since 1964 when he helped me land a silver springer, has achieved legendary status because he has undoubtedly caught more salmon in the UK thank any other angler, alive or dead.
He caught close on 700 salmon in two successive years, one of the years beating the great Robert “Wizard of the Wye” Pashley’s record of 678 salmon in 1936.
By the time he was appointed head ghillie at Ballathie 18 years ago George had landed around 14,000 salmon to his own rod.
Goodness knows how many he’s caught since then – maybe approaching 20,000 – but the one he steered his angler to on Monday will almost certainly stand out in his mind as one of the most memorable.
George’s birthday was celebrated with a lunch hosted on the riverbank by his under ghillie Garry McErlain, and attended by his daughters, Kim and Mandy, myself and wife, local ghillies, and of course, Ian Tait and his angling friend, Dr Ian Preston.

These are pictures taken of the 20 pounds Tay Springer caught on the Stobhall beat just above Stanley on the river Tay in Perthshire, Scotland yesterday.
The fresh salmon was caught by Richard Greenwell on the Linn Pool on a Devon. It was Richards first Tay Spring Salmon. What a way to start!

Salmon Fishing Scotland Spring Salmon Fishing 2010.
Salmon Fishing Scotland Spring Salmon Fishing 2010.
This was a typical spring fishing day on the Tay at Stanley, Perthshire, Scotland with plenty of action in January 2010. Unfortunately there were no spring salmon landed but there were quite a few Kelts and Baggots.
A baggot on the fly from the Fives Trees pool of the Pitlochrie beat of the lower Tay.
A Kelt comes to the net.
Another Kelt on the harled fly from Horsey.

Salmon Fishing Scotland Spring Salmon Fishing on the Tay 2010.
Salmon Fishing Scotland Spring Salmon Fishing on the Tay 2010.
This was the luckiest angler on the River Tay in Perthshire, Scotland today. Alan McCaig from Bridge of Allan landed 2 Spring salmon in a matter of half an hour from the Aitken Head pool on the lower Tay Benchil beat below Stanley, Perthshire, Scotland on the Upper Scone fishings. Alan's salmon weighed 9 and 13 pounds and were both carefully returned in line with the Tay River Board recommendations of returning all spring salmon. That is now 4 salmon from the Benchil beat. The cold water temperature must be helping the lower Tay beats by slowing the salmon down. The river temperature was 36F or 2C today. Let us hope these catches continue throughout the spring.
