Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Reports and Prospects August 2009.

Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Reports and Prospects August 2009.

Tay Reports

Weekly Report for week ending 15th August 2009.

Last week reported 89 Salmon and 11 Sea Trout which was a reasonable catch despite yet again unsettled conditions. We had unsettled weather during the week with heavy thundery down pours making the river rise and fall on a regular basis.

There were other fish being caught and not reported. There does now seem to be a good spread of Salmon throughout the district however we are expecting a much stronger run in the coming weeks.

Best salmon of the week were 17lbs summer salmon off the Stobhall beat just above Stanley.
Other notable catches included 5 in one day off the Upper Islamouth beat on Tuesday and 5 on Saturday off the Taymount beat.

This past week saw a spread of catches throughout the river which certainly looks good for the coming weeks. The Grilse run will get better in the coming week but encouragingly there are quite a lot of good summer salmon running the river.

The river temperature is around 60 degrees Fahrenheit or 15 degrees Celsius.

May I remind anglers coming to the Tay about the Catch and Release policy which is that all hen salmon and sea trout caught should be returned and large male salmon over 15 pounds to preserve sport for the future. It goes without saying that all red fish should de returned as well.

If you have any news or pictures of catches or experiences on the Tay and you would like to share them please email me on stanley.fishing@ukonline.co.uk
Thank you for the contributions so far
.

Mr Robin Hereford with his first Tay salmon, a long tailed sea-liced five-pounder, taken fly fishing from the Trap at Newtyle on 12 August 2009.

Prospects for the week commencing 17th August 2009.
The river is now at a good height with the weather looking more settled for this coming week which may make a real difference. Hopefully any showers will not be too heavy to alter the river levels.
.
Stronger runs are expected as we go into the third week in August. Hopefully this will be the week which is now well overdue.

The water temperature is about 60 degrees Fahrenheit or 15 degrees Celsius.

The river is running at a good height which will allow salmon to run the entire river Tay.

There is good availability throughout the river so why not have a go.

As to methods, the river is settled and at a good height, the most likely method of catching Tay Salmon this week will favour all methods with settled water. There will certainly be good conditions for fly fishing with a higher river temperature now encouraging floating lines. Spinning from boat and bank are also favoured.. The rise in river temperature should encourage baits spun upstream and retrieved quickly.

Finally all anglers are reminded that the Tay's policy for Catch and Release in 2009 we now recommend that every angler should release all hen salmon caught each day and all Sea Trout. We also recommend that all male salmon over 15 pounds should be released and certainly any red fish . Salmon are an extremely precious resource. Please do what you can to ensure their numbers are allowed to conserve them and produce more salmon for the future.

If you have any news or pictures of catches or experiences on the Tay and you would like to share them please email me on stanley.fishing@ukonline.co.uk

89 salmon for the week and thats a reasonable catch! How many of these were fish that had been caught before due to catch and release? How many were older fish? Wot a poor catch! The Tay is on its knees. But remember we are now only allowed to fish one hook on our rapalas. Wot a fantastic policy decision!

hear hear!! The quicker this board management in its current form is removed the better for the future of the Tay. Time for a Coup d'état

Well said last posts. Maybe we should start a Tay Anglers Association, on the lines of the ghillies association. Apparenyly there is an anglers representative on the board but I don`t know who he is! Any ideas anyone?
