Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Reports and Prospects August 2009.
Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Reports and Prospects August 2009.
Tay Reports
Weekly Report for week ending 29th August 2009.
Last week reported 144 Salmon and 8 Sea Trout which was a far better catch despite yet again unsettled conditions. We had unsettled weather during the week with heavy down pours making the river rise and fall on a regular basis. August is now being reported as the wettest on record. There is now plenty of water in the river encouraging salmon to run.
There were other fish being caught and not reported. There does now seem to be a good spread of Salmon throughout the district and at last a far stronger run with Grilse in the main stem of the river.
Best salmon of the week were 18lbs summer salmon off the Cargil beat and Upper Scone beat.
Other notable catches included 8 in one day off the Kercock beat on Friday and 6 off the Benchil and Pitlochrie beat on Tuesday.
The river in general has picked up this last week which is heartening after a lean spell over the last few weeks
This past week saw a spread of catches throughout the river which certainly looks good for the coming weeks. The Grilse run still has improved but hopefully will get better in the coming weeks. Encouragingly there are quite a lot of good summer salmon running the river.
The river temperature has now dropped just below 60 degrees Fahrenheit or 15 degrees Celsius due to all the rain.
May I remind anglers coming to the Tay about the Catch and Release policy which is that all hen salmon and sea trout caught should be returned and large male salmon over 15 pounds to preserve sport for the future. It goes without saying that all red fish should returned as well.
Newtyle ghillie,David Steele, with his 11lber taken from the Lairds Bank on 27th August 2009. The fish was returned.
If you have any news or pictures of catches or experiences on the Tay and you would like to share them please email me on stanley.fishing@ukonline.co.uk
Thank you for the contributions so far .
Prospects for the week commencing 31st August 2009.
The river now has plenty of water with all the rain and is running at a good height. Unfortunately the weather for this coming week looks unsettled again. Hopefully any showers will not be too heavy to alter the river levels.
.
The run has strengthened so prospects look much better going into September this coming week.
The water temperature is now just below 60 degrees Fahrenheit or 15 degrees Celsius with all the rain and fresh water.
The river is running at a good height which will allow salmon to run the entire river Tay.
There is good availability throughout the river so why not have a go.
As to methods, the river is settled and at a good height, the most likely method of catching Tay Salmon this week will favour all methods with settled water. There will certainly be good conditions for fly fishing with a higher river temperature now encouraging floating lines. Spinning from boat and bank are also favoured.. The rise in river temperature should encourage baits spun upstream and retrieved quickly.
Finally all anglers are reminded that the Tay's policy for Catch and Release in 2009 we now recommend that every angler should release all hen salmon caught each day and all Sea Trout. We also recommend that all male salmon over 15 pounds should be released and certainly any red fish . Salmon are an extremely precious resource. Please do what you can to ensure their numbers are allowed to conserve them and produce more salmon for the future.
If you have any news or pictures of catches or experiences on the Tay and you would like to share them please email me on stanley.fishing@ukonline.co.uk

Salmon Fishing Scotland The Malloch Challenge Trophy.
Salmon Fishing Scotland The Malloch Challenge Trophy.
Now we are about to enter the Autumn period of the Salmon fishing season this is a reminder that the Malloch Trophy is back for this season in Scotland.
It is awarded to the angler who catches and returns the largest Atlantic Salmon fly fishing in Scottish waters.
The details are listed below. Tight lines.
MALLOCH CHALLENGE TROPHY
The most prestigious and historic trophy in the Scottish angling world, The Malloch Challenge Trophy has been reinstated from the opening of the 2009 salmon fishing season after an absence of 10 years.
The magnificent silver model of a leaping salmon, which for decades was the most coveted and keenly contested award in Scotland, has been acquired by The Tay Foundation under the Chairmanship of John Milligan. It will again be awarded annually to the angler catching the heaviest salmon of the season on any Scottish River. The new criteria for the Trophy will reflect the Tay Board’s promotion of Conservation in that the fish which must be caught on a fly must also be released alive back into the water.
History:
The Malloch Challenge Trophy is named after the Perth-based manufacturer and retailer of fishing tackle, Mallochs of Perth – one of the most legendary names in Scottish tackle history. Its founder was P D Malloch, one of the greatest authorities of his day on salmon.
The Malloch Trophy was first awarded in 1972 for a 43lb fish caught on the Tweed by Lady Burnett and last awarded in 1999 following a run of 28 consecutive years for a 33lb fish caught on the Spey by Mr J Montupet; during this time the winning fish came from a variety of rivers including the Dee, Spey, Tweed, Tay and Naver. 2 ladies apart from Lady Burnett have been winners of the trophy with fish from the Tweed (33lbs) and the Spey (35lbs).
After 1999 the trophy was not presented and remained locked in a cupboard for over 10 years and was lost to the salmon fishing world until the Tay Foundation was able to acquire it.
Secretary to the Malloch Trophy:
Robert Rattray of CKD Galbraith has been appointed as Secretary for the Malloch Trophy. Entries should be submitted in line with Challenge Trophy critera and the final decision will be made immediately after the end of the season by a committee.
Criteria for application for the Award are detailed below.

Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Reports and Prospects August 2009.
Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Reports and Prospects August 2009.
Tay Reports
Weekly Report for week ending 15th August 2009.
Last week reported 89 Salmon and 11 Sea Trout which was a reasonable catch despite yet again unsettled conditions. We had unsettled weather during the week with heavy thundery down pours making the river rise and fall on a regular basis.
There were other fish being caught and not reported. There does now seem to be a good spread of Salmon throughout the district however we are expecting a much stronger run in the coming weeks.
Best salmon of the week were 17lbs summer salmon off the Stobhall beat just above Stanley.
Other notable catches included 5 in one day off the Upper Islamouth beat on Tuesday and 5 on Saturday off the Taymount beat.
This past week saw a spread of catches throughout the river which certainly looks good for the coming weeks. The Grilse run will get better in the coming week but encouragingly there are quite a lot of good summer salmon running the river.
The river temperature is around 60 degrees Fahrenheit or 15 degrees Celsius.
May I remind anglers coming to the Tay about the Catch and Release policy which is that all hen salmon and sea trout caught should be returned and large male salmon over 15 pounds to preserve sport for the future. It goes without saying that all red fish should de returned as well.
If you have any news or pictures of catches or experiences on the Tay and you would like to share them please email me on stanley.fishing@ukonline.co.uk
Thank you for the contributions so far .
Mr Robin Hereford with his first Tay salmon, a long tailed sea-liced five-pounder, taken fly fishing from the Trap at Newtyle on 12 August 2009.
Prospects for the week commencing 17th August 2009.
The river is now at a good height with the weather looking more settled for this coming week which may make a real difference. Hopefully any showers will not be too heavy to alter the river levels.
.
Stronger runs are expected as we go into the third week in August. Hopefully this will be the week which is now well overdue.
The water temperature is about 60 degrees Fahrenheit or 15 degrees Celsius.

Salmon Fishing Scotland Smoked Salmon Award.
Salmon Fishing Scotland Smoked Salmon Award.
Great taste is own reward
This was an article in the local paper on Saturday. Well done the Dunkeld Smokehouse.
Master smoker Ronnie Ross (left) and Rob Gower display some of the smoke-house’s produce.
A PERTHSHIRE company is celebrating after winning a pair of Great Taste Awards.
Dunkeld Smoked Salmon has been granted a one-star Gold Great Taste Award for its wild smoked salmon and a two-star gold for its organically-reared sea trout.
It already has a gold award for farmed smoked salmon, given last year by organisers, the Guild of Fine Food.
Joint owner Rob Gower said, “We are delighted with these further awards.
“Winning a Great Taste Award recognises the craft and dedication that goes into making superb food and drink.”
The business is a traditional and artisan smoke-house situated in Dunkeld, on the banks of one of the world’s best salmon rivers, the Tay.
The smokehouse was established over 30 years ago primarily to smoke anglers’ own fish, although the retail side of the business has grown steadily over the years.
The business smokes salmon sourced from Scottish waters and sustainable Loch Duart farmed salmon, as well as the sea trout reared in the Shetlands.
Bob Farrand of the Guild of Fine Food said, “Lovers of fine food and drink only pay for the best if they’re certain what they’re buying is the best.
“Every food with a Great Taste Award gold has been independently proven to be just that.”

Salmon Fishing Scotland Fly Fishing for Young Anglers.
It is so important to encourage new blood into our sport of Salmon fishing and in particular to salmon fly fishing.
This was my daughter Ellie learning the first steps of Spey Casting with the casting expert Andy Murray at Kelso on the river Tweed last Sunday.
Ellie learned very quickly the roll cast over right and left shoulder with the aid of a light Loomis rod and Andy's guidance. Notice the concentration watching the D loop forming before the cast. Her sister Bethany took the pictures.

There were other fish being caught and not reported. There does now seem to be a good spread of Salmon throughout the district however we are expecting a much stronger run in the coming weeks.
Best salmon of the week were 16lbs summer salmon off the Stobhall beat and Pitlochrie beat.
Other notable catches included 7 in one day off the Ballathie beat of which 6 were summer salmon and 5 on Saturday off the Waulkmill beat.
This past week saw a spread of catches throughout the river which certainly looks good for the coming weeks. The Grilse run will get better in the coming week but encouragingly there are quite a lot of good summer salmon running the river.
The river temperature is around 62degrees Fahrenheit or 17 degrees Celsius.
Ian Lamont with his first ever Tay salmon - weighing 7lb - taken fly fishing in the Cotter on Newtyle on 1st August 2009. His second Tay salmon followed later in the day a 4lb sea-liced grilse. Iain returned both his fish.
Newtyle ghillie, David Steele, releasing a 6lb salmon from the steps pool on Newtyle. David's fish was taken on a Vision 110 from the boat.
Prospects for the week commencing 10th August.
The river is now at a good height however the weather looks unsettled for this coming week which may make life difficult. Hopefully the showers will not be too heavy to alter the river levels.
.
We are expecting stronger runs as we go into the second week in August. Hopefully this will be the week.
The water temperature is about 62 degrees Fahrenheit or 17 degrees Celsius.

The Tay has produced some big Salmon this year. Could a Tay salmon win the famous Malloch Trophy for the largest Salmon caught on the fly this year?
