Salmon Fishing Scotland Autumn Flood on the Tay, Perthshire, Scotland November 2009.
This is the scene at Stanley, Perthshire, Scotland this morning after the torrential rain yesterday. The river rose to over 13 feet or just over 4.6 meters. All this water will certainly help the salmon get to their destinations throughout the Tay catchment to spawn. A spate like this is fine at this time of year but if this happens just after spawning in December and January it can undo all the spawning by washing out all the redds. I am sure this has been the case in the main stem of the Tay in recent years. A small spate can be fine but these massive rises in water heights can not help. Is this a result of global warming?
This is Stanley Mills with the river right up to the walls.
The SEPA graph at Ballathie showing the tidal wave coming down the "mighty" river Tay. It is alarming how quickly the river rises to these heights.
