World Fly Fishing Championships: Scotland fight back to land bronze
Jun 11 2009 Arnot McWhinnie
SCOTLAND snatched bronze in the team event of the World Fly Fishing Championships after a stirring final-day comeback.
Builder Calum Crosbie from Newton Stewart also became fifth-top angler in the world, with Davie Chalmers No.14.
Team manager George Mackenzie said: "We are over the moon with our first medal at this level.
"The last day was critical for us. At the start of yesterday'session we were ninth so it took an absolutely incredible effort to get a bronze.
"Our plan was to put everything into the team event so it was a fantastic plus to have one of our squad get fifth place in the world rankings."
The five-man squad, captained by Derick Logan from Coldstream, will receive their bronze medals during an Olympic-style ceremony at Drymen, the HQ of the World Championships tonight. The other members of the Scottish team are Donald Forbes from Glasgow, James Litster of Kilmaurs and Simon Cocker from Eaglesham.
The gold medal position in the team event was snatched from France who led most of the way, by the English team, whose Ian Barr also became the world's No.1 trout angler.
