Salmon Fishing Scotland Spring Fly Fishing at Stanley, Perthshire, Scotland for Salmon 2009.
The one that got away.
Peter Callaghan playing a spring salmon on the fly from the boat today in the Woodside on the Pitlochrie beat of the lower Tay at Stanley, Perthshire, Scotland.
The salmon was hooked in the Minister pool on the opposite side of the river harling a 3 inch tube fly out the back of the boat. It was incredibly windy today (14/03/2009)so we abandoned casting the fly to resort to harling. Peter and i were in deep conversation when the fly line suddenly screeched out with out warning. The fish took the tube fly and just kept going. In a short period of time we were well done into the backing and still going. I started to chase after the salmon in the boat having retrieved the other rods. The fish had run to the other bank, some 150 yards away. We caught up with the fish by retrieving the line and it was still on but on the other side of the river.
When we got into the bank the fish was close to us but it was very strong and stayed well out of reach and never surfaced. We thought it was a monster but after a while i could see the salmon under the water and would have estimated it at between 15 and 20 pounds. When i put my Polaroids on i could clearly see the fish and the tube fly in its mouth all be it on the side and it was using the strong current to stay out of reach. Not only could i see the salmon but its back was covered in sea lice. Peter played the fish well but before he could get it in the hook pulled out.
