Salmon Fishing Scotland Ladies Day Spring Salmon Fishing on the Tay.

Salmon Fishing Scotland Ladies Day Spring Salmon Fishing on the Tay.

There was a ladies day at Taymount beat on the Tay just above Stanley, Perthshire, Scotland last monday.

The ladies included Charlotte Gifford, Penny Scott, Celia Temple, Lorna Bromley-Martin and host Miranda Linsay. As we all know the ladies always catch because of all the pheromones they emit! Could this be the case last monday? Conditions were not good with it being very windy.

Despite the adverse conditions the ladies struck. This is Charlotte Gifford playing a fresh run spring salmon from the boat in the Stank end pool of the upper Taymount beat on the fly. The salmon took a Temple dog fly fished from the boat with expert guidance from Scottish Ghillie Geordie Maitland.

Geordie quickly unhooks the 11 pounds spring salmon.

A quick picture of the prize and then it was carefully returned to the river.
The ladies had another 2 Kelts for their day for good measure.
It was a very enjoyable day on the river.

Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Reports and Prospects March 2009.

Tay Reports week ending 28th March 2009.

Weekly Report.
Last week reported the best catch for the spring season with 47 spring salmon reported. There were again salmon reported from all over the district which was very positive for this coming week. There were other fish caught and not reported giving the Tay the best catch of the major 4 rivers in Scotland. It must be said however that all the rivers expect more than this and everyone is hoping this is just the start of a better run. Best salmon of the week was a 22lbs salmon off the Pitlochry Angling water at Portnacraig below the Dam at Pitlochry and was caught by Steven Watt from Perth. Also 2 beats on the river had 3 in a day this week which included Dunkeld and Islamouth. The river temperature remained at about 42 degrees Fahrenheit or 5 degrees Celsius allowing salmon to run freely throughout the system.

The river was settled for most of the week making conditions ideal for spring fishing. This coming week conditions remain similar which should not deter catches assuming the spring run strengthens as expected.

Steven Watt with his cracking spring salmon from thePortnacraig beat at Pitlochry. The salmon was carefully returned to the river. Well done Stevie.

Prospects for the coming week.
As of Monday morning the prospects on the Tay look good with a settled river. The weather is to remain reasonably settled for the coming week therefore catches should get better. The spring run has improved but we expect it to get better. This could be the week hopefully!

The water temperature is about 42 degrees Fahrenheit or 5 degrees Celsius which should not impede the progress of salmon up the system.
There is good availability throughout the river so why not have a go.

As to methods, the river is settled and at a good height, the most likely method of catching a Springer in the Tay this week will favour all methods with settled water. There will certainly be good conditions for fly fishing and spinning from boat and bank. Harling or on some beats spinning from the bank remains a favoured method on the Tay.

Finally all anglers are reminded that the Tay's policy for spring 2009 is that every angler should release the first salmon caught each day, and then no more than one Springer should be taken per day. Spring salmon are a precious resource. Please do what you can to ensure their numbers are allowed to conserve them and produce more spring salmon for the future.

Tay Reports

Weekly Report.
Last week reported a similar catch to the previous week with 34. There were again salmon reported from all over the district which was very positive for this coming week. There were other fish caught and not reported. Best salmon of the week was a 28lbs salmon off the Newtyle beat below Dunkeld and yes this prize salmon was caught by a lady angler Mrs Helena Carver. The river temperature is now about 42 degrees Fahrenheit or 5 degrees Celsius allowing salmon to run freely throughout the system.

The river was settled for most of the week and with higher temperatures making conditions ideal for spring fishing. This coming week conditions look good but with colder weather expected however this should not deter catches assuming the spring run strengthens as expected.

As of Monday morning the prospects on the Tay look good with a settled river. The weather is to remain reasonably settled but slightly colder for the coming week therefore catches should get better. The spring run is overdue and the anticipation is very high. This could be the week hopefully!

Prospects for the week commencing 16/02/2009.
As of Monday morning the prospects on the Tay look good with the river dropping after a rise on Saturday due to melting snow and higher temperatures. The weather is to remain reasonably settled for the coming week therefore catches should get better this coming week. The spring run is due at any time and the anticipation is very high. The one that got away.

Peter Callaghan playing a spring salmon on the fly from the boat today in the Woodside on the Pitlochrie beat of the lower Tay at Stanley, Perthshire, Scotland.
The salmon was hooked in the Minister pool on the opposite side of the river harling a 3 inch tube fly out the back of the boat. It was incredibly windy today (14/03/2009)so we abandoned casting the fly to resort to harling. Peter and i were in deep conversation when the fly line suddenly screeched out with out warning. The fish took the tube fly and just kept going. In a short period of time we were well done into the backing and still going. I started to chase after the salmon in the boat having retrieved the other rods. The fish had run to the other bank, some 150 yards away. We caught up with the fish by retrieving the line and it was still on but on the other side of the river.

When we got into the bank the fish was close to us but it was very strong and stayed well out of reach and never surfaced. We thought it was a monster but after a while i could see the salmon under the water and would have estimated it at between 15 and 20 pounds. When i put my Polaroids on i could clearly see the fish and the tube fly in its mouth all be it on the side and it was using the strong current to stay out of reach. Not only could i see the salmon but its back was covered in sea lice. Peter played the fish well but before he could get it in the hook pulled out.

Salmon Fishing Scotland Spring Fishing at Catholes, Stanley, Perthshire, Scotland 2009.

Salmon Fishing Scotland Spring Fishing at Catholes, Stanley, Perthshire, Scotland 2009.

This was Nigel Passmores take on his day with us on Monday.

Now we are in to March and close to the mid month spring tides, East Coast Scottish spring salmon fishing becomes less of a triumph of hope over expectation. Up until this week I'd had two outings to mid Dee and Lower Canal which yielded kelts and no springers; enjoyable, but statistically probable. So 2 of the big 4 down an don to the weakest of them for springers; back to hope over expectation.

I have fished much of the Lower Tay, but not the bit around Stanley. I was due to be fishing three days on a private beat of another East Coast river for three days, but let my Monday rod to some who wanted to fish it. So looking for somewhere else, March is the time for Stanley Beats and it was en route - the rest is history.

Catholes was, historically, one of the premium spring Tay Beats because of the weir which acted as a temperature barrier. The weir was blown in three parts in the early 80s and the beat has never been quite the force since. Now for those who fish "burns" that would not be out of place in Lilliput, this is a salmon river.

So where do you start? Well lets start with a Tay Legend. The longest serving boatman on the river; Lord Geordie of Stewart.

They say behind every great man is a great woman. Other than turning his back on me when I'm talking, I couldn't see any obvious signs of the female form or intuition but here is Bob...or should that be Bobetta?

On Monday only one other rod, Robert from Paris, was out so we each had a boat both sessions. That led to a first for me, a whole day fly fishing on the Lower Tay in March.

The morning, out with Bob, on the bottom of the beat at the Dam where the river starts to narrow before going in to the Stanley Gorge had a challenging swirling wind (the one where it can blow in 4 different directions during the course of one cast). This produced the good the bad and the downright ugly in my snakey jakey roll. We saw the odd fuish and a kelt or twa but no obvious activity.

After a Parisian style lunch I went in the boat with Geordie at the Weir. To cut a short story long, we ended anchored up in the middle of the river in front of the weir. Out there the water is only 4 - 5 feet deep. After only four casts with an intermediate compensator, a type 3 tip and a big golden WG waddington the rod was pulled forward, the reel screamed and a big spade like tail smashed the surface - sometimes you are in no doubt you've hooked a springer. Look at the size of the river above, all that current at 4' 11" above summer level, and I don't think I need to tell you what the fight was like; it is one of the reasons that makes the Tay almost unique in the UK. After ten minutes of angler and fish slugging it out Geordie did the honours with the net.

14lbs, covered in sea lice and swam off strongly. This is why we go spring salmon fishing.

Thanks Nigel, Haste ye back.

Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Reports and Prospects March 2009.

Tay Reports

Weekly Report.
Week ending 7th March 2009
Last week reported the best catch of the season so far with 34. There were again salmon reported from all over the district which was very positive for this coming week. There were a number of other fish caught and not reported including a 20 pounds salmon at Burnmouth. As I understand it quite a few are being caught in Loch Tay as well.

The temperature of the water dropped a bit last week with the colder weather but that should not impede the progress of Salmon up the river. The beats around Dunkeld reported a good run going through on Friday so they should have made it well up the system by now.

The weather has been unsettled over the weekend causing the river to rise today (08/03/2009) however once it settles and assuming the weather remains all right there should be better catches throughout the system this coming week. It was this week last year the spring catches improved dramatically.

Video of the weather on Sunday 8th March 2009 at Stanley, Perthshire, Scotland.

Prospects for the week.
As of Monday morning week commencing 9th March 2009 the prospects on the Tay look good with the river dropping after a 7 foot spate on the lower river at the weekend. Assuming the weather remains reasonably settled the catches should get better this coming week. It was this week last year the catches improved and the real spring run started.

The water temperature has dropped a bit with the colder weather to just below 40 degrees Fahrenheit or 4 degrees Celsius however I do not think that will impede the progress of salmon up the system. A reasonable run of fish were reported going through the Dunkeld area on Friday of last week so there are fish about.
I would predict much better catches this coming week. There is good availability throughout the river so why not have a go.

As to methods assuming the river settles back to a good height, the most likely method of catching a Springer in the Tay this week will favour all methods with settled water. There will certainly be better conditions for fly fishing and spinning from boat and bank.

Salmon Fishing Scotland Spring March 2009.

Salmon Fishing Scotland Spring March 2009.

This was the scene at Stanley today (05/02/2009)with heavy snow showers. We had one kelt fly fishing from the bank and a couple of close calls with potential springers. Geordie had a salmon on the line in Pitlochrie pool which played very hard and was lost after 5 minutes going round a snag. I had a hold of a salmon in the Wash House casting the fly from the boat but could not say for definite if it was a spring salmon as it was a distance from the boat. There is always tomorrow.

Salmon fishing Scotland Spring Salmon Fishing on the Tay, Perthshire, Scotland March 2009.

Salmon fishing Scotland Spring Salmon Fishing on the Tay, Perthshire, Scotland March 2009.

There was a rise in water today with all the rain last night and also snow on the hill. (04/03/2009) The river was rising in the morning but settled nicely in the afternoon. We didn't catch anything but George McKinlay had a tremendous day on the Horsey pool below us on the Upper Scone beat at Stanley, Perthshire, Scotland catching 2 fresh run springers from the bank. They weighed 9 and 15 pounds and were both returned to the river.

Girls in the boat. What is all the fuss about this salmon fishing lark.

Salmon Fishing Scotland Spring Salmon Fishing March 2009.

This was a picture taken last spring of Scottish Ghillie Davie Seaton with a lovely fresh run spring salmon. Today (02/03/2009) Davie caught a cracking 18 pounds fresh run spring salmon in Pitlochrie pool at Stanley, Perthshire, Scotland on the upper Scone bank which was also carefully returned to the river. The catches on the river improved today. Taymount had a good day with two 18 pounds spring salmon and the Kercock beat had 3 spring salmon.

Salmon Fishing Scotland Salmon Fishing Reports for the river Tay March 2009.

Salmon Fishing Scotland Salmon Fishing Reports for the river Tay March 2009.

Tay Reports

Weekly Report.
Last week ended on a bit of a positive note with eight salmon reported on Saturday however earlier in the week the catches were disappointing. There were 24 salmon reported for the weeks but others were caught as well and not reported. The temperature of the water continues to rise with the mild weather and fish have now been caught up the Ericht where it was reported the water temperature was as high as 44 degrees. The rise in the temperature has enabled salmon to run throughout the entire system as 3 fresh salmon were caught at Pitlochry Dam on Saturday. There is colder weather forecast for this coming week which should help the lower Tay beats and with us now going into March the run should strengthen.

Prospects for the week.
As of Monday morning the prospects on the Tay look good with the river continuing to drop and running at a good height. The forecast for this coming week is much colder with some snow showers and the chance of frosts at night. These conditions should help the lower river and with us now going into March the spring run should strengthen.

The water temperature has risen to about 42 to 44 degrees Fahrenheit or 6 to 7 degrees Celsius enabling salmon to run. Colder weather should bring the water temperature back a bit but there could still be catches throughout the whole system again this coming week. Fresh salmon are certainly entering the river and running hard as the catches proved last week with salmon caught on the Tummel and the Ericht.
I would predict much better catches this coming week. There is good availability throughout the river so why not have a go.

As to methods, the most likely method of catching a Springer in the Tay this week will favour all methods with settled water. There will certainly be better conditions for fly fishing and spinning from boat and bank.
