Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Reports and Prospects June 2009.
Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Reports and Prospects June 2009.
Tay Reports
Weekly Report for week ending 27th June 2009.
Last week reported 56 Salmon and 18 Sea Trout which was an average catch for a week in June but disappointing. We had very warm weather for most of the week but conditions improved towards the end of the week improving catches for the last few days. There were again salmon reported from all over the district which was very positive and the catches have improved in recent weeks which hopefully will continue with more Grilse appearing with settled conditions. There were other fish caught and not reported. Best salmon of the week was a 17lbs salmon off the Lower Kinnaird beat just below Pitlochry.
Islamouth continues to fish very well with a strong end to the week.
The first Grilse have arrived as well with odd ones reported over the last two weeks.
Also on a positive note good numbers of Sea Trout are continuing to be caught. The figure of 18 for the week is not a true reflection of the total catch. Several beats are now reporting good catches and this must be one of the best years for sea trout for many years.
The lower water and warmer nights will encourage night fishing.
The middle area of the Tay continues to do well with good catches this past week. The prospects certainly look good for this coming week with more reasonable weather conditions but could be impeded with heavy thundery showers.
.
Sea trout are now being caught throughout the Tay which should encourage a cast in the evenings with a fly rod.
The river temperature has settled to 60 degrees Fahrenheit or 16 degrees Celsius which should allow salmon to run freely throughout the system and bring salmon to the floating line fishing for fly fishers. For the spinners, Salmon will now chase baits freely for the upstream Tobiers and flying C enthusiasts.
May I remind anglers coming to the Tay about the Catch and Release policy which is that all hen salmon and sea trout caught should be returned and large male salmon over 15 pounds to preserve sport for the future. It goes without saying that all red fish should de returned as well.
If you have any news or pictures of catches or experiences on the Tay and you would like to share them please email me on stanley.fishing@ukonline.co.uk
Thank you for the contributions so far.
A June 19 pounds Salmon caught fly fishing by Gary McDonald on the Newtyle beat at Dunkeld, Perthshire, Scotland.
Prospects for the week commencing 29th June 2009.
As of Monday morning the prospects on the Tay look good with a settled summer level river, a reasonable run of fresh salmon for the time of year and a good sea trout run which is far better than last year. The weather is reasonably settled for this coming week which should encourage good sport. However there could be some thundery downpours.
The water temperature is about 60 degrees Fahrenheit or 16 degrees Celsius which should encourage the progress of salmon up the system. These conditions are certainly benefiting the middle and Upper River.
The river has dropped back with the drier conditions which should help the lower river and with a good sea trout run in progress there is a good variety of sport to be had.
There is good availability throughout the river so why not have a go.
As to methods, the river is settled and at a good height, the most likely method of catching Tay Salmon this week will favour all methods with settled water. There will certainly be good conditions for fly fishing with a higher river temperature now encouraging floating lines. Spinning from boat and bank are also favoured. Harling remains a popular method on the Tay. The rise in river temperature should encourage baits spun upstream and retrieved quickly.
Finally all anglers are reminded that the Tay's policy for Catch and Release in 2009 we now recommend that every angler should release all hen salmon caught each day and all Sea Trout. We also recommend that all male salmon over 15 pounds should be released and certainly any red fish . Salmon are an extremely precious resource. Please do what you can to ensure their numbers are allowed to conserve them and produce more salmon for the future.
If you have any news or pictures of catches or experiences on the Tay and you would like to share them please email me on stanley.fishing@ukonline.co.uk

Salmon Fishing Scotland The Tay Dinner 2009.
These are pictures of the recently held Tay Conservation Dinner held at the Ballathie House Hotel on 11th June 2009.
This was Roddy Willis of Savills introducing the Tay Long service awards.
Awards were given to Willie MacGregor from Atholl Estates, Jimmy Barratt from Stanley and Dennis Buchan from the Kercock beat who have all retired from the river after many years service.
This was myself introducing the one and only Jim Davidson.
This was Jim Davidson in full flight.
He was truly magnificent as a speaker and will be a hard act to follow.
Totally unscripted and yet managed to bring in all aspects of the river Tay and its personnel with his gift to tell the most outrageous stories.
A true legend and certainly deserving the O.B.E for services to television and entertainment, particularly of British Soldiers in conflict zones.
This is the Dandy Davidson fly designed by Cohn O'Dea and Ranald Hutton which was specially commissioned for Jim Davidson for the occasion. This was presented to Jim on the night as a momenta of the occasion.
The pictured frame of the fly.
All on the Tay must thank Jim Davidson for coming over to perform and also to Tay fisher Steven Lamprell for bringing him to our great river.

Lastly the river boards scientist David Summers giving his slant on the river and where we must go to improve the Tay.
David Summers does a lot for the river and the vast amount goes unnoticed. The Tay is a very complex system with a lot of different problems and it is not until you visit the river Tay that you can understand this.
A truly gifted man who deserves all our support.

Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Reports and Prospects June 2009.
Tay Reports
Weekly Report for week ending 20th June 2009.
Last week reported 70 Salmon and 53 Sea Trout which was a good catch for a week in early June despite the very unsettled conditions due to the heavy thundery rain showers. We had an unsettled river for most of the week but conditions improved towards the end of the week improving catches for the last few days. There were other fish caught and not reported. Best salmon of the week was an 18lbs salmon off the Newtyle beat just below Dunkeld.
Coupar Grange continues to fish very well. They have now caught 75 Salmon for the month which is the best catch for years. Portnacraig figured well this week with the fresh water and Islamouth did well despite the unsettled river.
The first Grilse have arrived as well with odd ones reported over the last two weeks.
Also on a positive note good numbers of Sea Trout are continuing to be caught. The figure of 53 for the week is not a true reflection of the total catch. Several beats are now reporting good catches and this must be one of the best years for sea trout for many years.

For the spinners, Salmon will now chase baits freely for the upstream Tobiers and flying C enthusiasts.
May I remind anglers coming to the Tay about the Catch and Release policy which is that we urgently request you to return all salmon and sea trout caught due to the weak run this spring and to preserve sport for the future.

Salmon Fishing Scotland Large Spring Salmon on the Fly on the Cascapedia river in Canada.
Recently colleagues of mine visited the Cascapedia river in Quebec, Canada to fly fish for Atlantic salmon.
One of our ghillies At Stanley, Perthshire, Scotland Cohn O'Dea hooks a good salmon fly fishing from the bank on a good old scottish salmon fly.
The guide and Cohn realise it is a good fish.
The guide waits with the net.
The salmon is in the net and it is quickly unhooked.
What a picture. The prize salmon weighed a fantastic 38 pounds.
The prize salmon is released back to the river for the future. well done Cohn, what a fish and on the fly.

Salmon Fishing Scotland June Salmon Fishing on the Tay 2009.
Last week the river Tay hosted Jim Davidson and Steven Lamprell for the prestigious Tay Conservation dinner which was held at Ballathie House Hotel.
On the Thursday I was lucky to take Jim and Steve to the Meikleour beat of the Tay as a guest of the owners Sam and Claire Mercer-Nairn.
This was Jim Davidson fly fishing in the Castle stream which is one of the best casts in the entire Tay.
The surroundings are magical and the expectation is high.
It is not long before the line tightens and Jim is playing a lively Sea Trout.
The Sea Trout was landed and a quick picture was taken before releasing it back to the river.
The boat anchored of the mouth of the river Isla.

Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Reports and Prospects June 2009.
Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Reports and Prospects June 2009.
Tay Reports
Weekly Report for week ending 13th June 2009.
This past week was a massive week for the river Tay. Firstly the Tay had their biggest catch for a week for the season so far and the Tay hosted its 4th annual Conservation Dinner in the Ballathie House Hotel which was a tremendous success.
Also last week the Stanley beats hosted the World Fly Fishing Championships for Trout from Monday to Wednesday with great world wide interest.
Last week reported 146 Salmon and 22 Sea Trout which was a great catch for a week in early June. We had a good settled river for the entire week but with slightly unsettled conditions at the end of the week just holding back catches for the last few days. There were again salmon reported from all over the district which was very positive and the catches improved dramatically from the previous week despite a slight glitch on Thursday and Friday. There were other fish caught and not reported. Best salmon of the week were 19lbs salmon off both the Newtyle beat just below Dunkeld and the Cargil beat at Ballathie below the mouth of the Isla. A good day of 14 was reported off the Coupar Grange beat on Saturday. Good salmon catches for the week came off the Kinnaird, Dunkeld House, Coupar Grange, Islamouth, Kercock, Cargill and Taymount beats which was tremendous for the time of year. Also on a positive note a number of Sea Trout have been caught. The figure of 22 for the week is not a true reflection of the total catch. Top beat was again Benchil just below Stanley with 10.
The Tay Conservation Dinner was held at Ballathie House Hotel on Thursday evening and was reported as s tremendous success raising money for Tay projects. The speaker comedian Jim Davidson went down very well and made the evening. Long service awards went to retired ghillies Jimmy Barratt, Dennis Buchan and Willie MacGregor.
The Tay Ghillies got the Conservation award for dramatically increasing the concept of Catch and Release on the river Tay.
The middle area of the Tay continues to do well with good catches this past week. The prospects certainly look good for this coming week with reasonable weather conditions
.
Sea trout are now being caught throughout the Tay which should encourage a cast in the evenings with a fly rod.
The river temperature has settled after the warm spell to 55/58 degrees Fahrenheit or 13/14 degrees Celsius which should allow salmon to run freely throughout the system and bring salmon to the floating line fishing for fly fishers.
If you have any news or pictures of catches or experiences on the Tay and you would like to share them please email me on stanley.fishing@ukonline.co.uk
Thank you for the contributions so far.
Jim Davidson with a fine Sea Trout landed on the Miekleour strech of the Tay prior to the dinner.
Jim Davidson in full flight in his after dinner speech at the dinner.
Prospects for the week commencing 15th June 2009.
As of Monday morning the prospects on the Tay look good with a settled river, a reasonable run of fresh salmon for the time of year and a good sea trout run which is far better than last year. The weather is reasonably settled for this coming week which should encourage good sport.
The water temperature is about 55/58 degrees Fahrenheit or 13/14 degrees Celsius which should encourage the progress of salmon up the system.
Finally all anglers are reminded that the Tay's policy for spring 2009 has changed due to the weak spring run and to comply with the other rivers we now recommend that every angler should release all salmon caught each day. Salmon are an extremely precious resource. Please do what you can to ensure their numbers are allowed to conserve them and produce more salmon for the future.
If you have any news or pictures of catches or experiences on the Tay and you would like to share them please email me on stanley.fishing@ukonline.co.uk

Salmon Fishing Scotland Tay Conservation Award 2009.
Salmon Fishing Scotland Tay Conservation Award 2009.
Ghillies honoured at awards
This was the article in the Dundee Courier today (12/06/2009) after the Tay Conservation Dinner held at Ballathie House Hotel last night.
THE VITAL role of the River Tay’s ghillies was formally recognised at a prestigious awards ceremony last night.
The celebrated Ballathie award for conservation was presented to the ghillies’ association following their role in dramatically increasing catch and release rates on the river.
With salmon numbers dwindling to a dangerous low, a range of new recommendations was introduced in a bid to conserve stocks.
Since then 75% of spring salmon caught by Tay anglers have been released, compared to a previous rate of between 40% and 50%.
The efforts of ghillies were lauded as hugely impressive at the awards ceremony, held at the Ballathie House Hotel.
Guest speaker was top entertainer, comedian and keen salmon angler Jim Davidson.
During the evening he was presented with a special new fly, aptly named, The Dandy Davidson.
The striking and original pattern was commissioned by the Tay Foundation and designed, created and tied by Tay ghillies Cohn O’Dea and Ranald Hutton.
John Milligan, chairman of the Tay District Salmon Fisheries Board (TDSFB), said the River Tay ghillies thoroughly merited this year’s Ballathie award.
“Since the board introduced its new conservation recommendations over a year ago, many of the river’s ghillies have been real ambassadors,” he said.
“The enthusiasm with which most members have promoted the policy has been a key element in the river achieving such a quantum leap in the number of salmon released back into the water.
“This accolade for their work during the 2008 season is richly deserved.”
Mr Milligan said the work of the ghillies has ensured the Tay remains one of the finest rivers to fish in Britain.
“Over the last few years the Tay ghillies have contributed greatly to the future well-being of the Tay’s salmon with work behind the scenes on a variety of conservation projects,” he continued.
“The board looks forward to working with them over the coming years in a joint effort to restore the Tay’s stocks of migratory fish.”
Tay Ghillies’ Association chairman David Godfrey said it was a huge honour to receive the award.
“We, as an association, are delighted to accept this prestigious award in recognition of the years of often unseen work and fund-raising the Tay ghillies have undertaken,” he said.
“It has been most heartening to see Tay anglers and proprietors as a whole adopting the conservation guidelines introduced last year and reaching a fantastic 75% release rate for spring salmon.
“We wholeheartedly applaud the board’s guidelines and will continue to work with anglers and proprietors to ensure the future of the Tay salmon.”
Previous winners of the conservation award include former Courier angling correspondent Ken Bell.
Other major honours presented at last night’s flagship dinner included long service awards to ghillies Willie MacGregor, Jimmy Barratt and Dennis Buchan.
Roddy Willis of award sponsors Savills said, “This award is long overdue and we are delighted to have been invited to act as sponsors.”
He continued, “I congratulate those who are to receive this prestigious award.”
The awards dinner, which also featured an auction and prize draw, is in aid of the Tay Foundation, a charitable trust with a remit to help the River Tay system, its fish and the environment.

World Fly Fishing Championships: Scotland fight back to land bronze
Jun 11 2009 Arnot McWhinnie
SCOTLAND snatched bronze in the team event of the World Fly Fishing Championships after a stirring final-day comeback.
Builder Calum Crosbie from Newton Stewart also became fifth-top angler in the world, with Davie Chalmers No.14.
Team manager George Mackenzie said: "We are over the moon with our first medal at this level.
"The last day was critical for us. At the start of yesterday'session we were ninth so it took an absolutely incredible effort to get a bronze.
"Our plan was to put everything into the team event so it was a fantastic plus to have one of our squad get fifth place in the world rankings."
The five-man squad, captained by Derick Logan from Coldstream, will receive their bronze medals during an Olympic-style ceremony at Drymen, the HQ of the World Championships tonight. The other members of the Scottish team are Donald Forbes from Glasgow, James Litster of Kilmaurs and Simon Cocker from Eaglesham.
The gold medal position in the team event was snatched from France who led most of the way, by the English team, whose Ian Barr also became the world's No.1 trout angler.

Salmon Fishing Scotland Fly Fishing on the Tay June 2009.
Salmon Fishing Scotland Fly Fishing on the Tay June 2009.
The Tay Conservation Dinner is nearly upon us again. This year the guest speaker is the comedian Jim Davidson and it will be held in the Ballathie House hotel near Stanley, Perthshire, Scotland.
Today (10/06/2006) I took Steven Lamprell and Jim Davidson up to the Dalmarnock beat for a days salmon fishing.
This was Jim Davidson spey casting across the Tay for the first time.
The heavens opened in the afternoon but that did not deter the effort.
They enjoyed their day but alas they didn't catch. A lovely fresh 10 pounds salmon was caught on the beat in the morning by another guest fly fishing which was carefully returned. Hopefully we will have better luck tomorrow.
