Salmon Fishing Scotland John Swinney to open River Tay Salmon Season 2011.

Salmon Fishing Scotland John Swinney to open River Tay Salmon Season 2011.

John Swinney MSP to “open” the River Tay at Dunkeld, as improved rod catches for the 2010 season are confirmed.

John Swinney, MSP for North Tayside and Cabinet Secretary for Finance and Sustainable Growth, will formally “open” the salmon fishing season on the Tay at Dunkeld on Saturday January 15th. The ceremony forms part of a day of events on the middle river, organised by the Dunkeld and Birnam Tourist and Angling Associations fully supported and endorsed by the Tay District Salmon Fisheries Board (TDSFB) and the Tay Foundation, to mark the start of the 2011 season.

The events include a procession of boats at 9 am from the Hilton Dunkeld House Hotel, accompanied by pipers, arriving at Taybank (immediately downstream of Dunkeld Bridge) at 9.15 am prior to the opening ceremony at 9.30 with the first cast being taken by Mr Swinney, assisted by Pete Wishart MSP. In addition there is an evening gathering in the Baronial Hall at the Birnam Hotel with musical entertainment.

The opening coincides with confirmation that the Tay’s rod catch of salmon in 2010 was over 11,000, a 50% increase on 2009. This reflects better catches in the late summer and autumn, mirrored by improved numbers recorded by the Ericht fish counter. For many beats 2010 was one of the best seasons for over 15 years and some recorded their best autumn catches for over 20 years.

William Jack, chairman of the TDSFB, commented: “The Tay Board is delighted with last season’s improved catches. We are also particularly heartened and encouraged with the response of anglers in complying with the Board’s Conservation Code. Almost 90 per cent of spring salmon were released back into the water. For the season as a whole the release rate was a remarkable 71 per cent”.

On January 15 anglers will be competing for the Redford Trophy, awarded for the biggest spring salmon caught and safely released on the main river.
