Salmon Fishing Scotland Tay Ghillies Secure Grant.

The Tay Ghillies Association have been given an award of £10,000 toward the cost of roofing for the salmon holding tanks at the Tay salmon hatchery.
The award was received from Lottery Awards for All, following an application prepared by Duncan Glass, a founder member and former office bearer of the association, one of many Duncan has successfully applied for over the past few years.
The Association will more than match the grant to pay for the £23,000 cost of the new roofing.
The cheque was received at the September meeting of the committee, and the photo shows committee members with centre chairman David Godfrey (left) and treasurer Simon Furniss (right) showing the cheque.

Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Report and Prospects for September 2009.

Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Report and Prospects for September 2009.

Tay Reports

Weekly Report for week ending 26th September 2009.

Last week reported 194 Salmon and 5 Sea Trout which was a reasonable catch despite the tough season so far. The weather was settled with a high pressure giving us perfect river conditions during the week. However it must be said that the run in general is not as strong as expected.

There were other fish being caught and not reported. There does now seem to be a spread of Salmon throughout the district as all the beats are catching.

Quite a few good 20 pound plus fish were caught this past week yet again which is quite heartening. Best salmon of the week was a fantastic 27lbs salmon off the Stobhall beat just above Stanley which was carefully returned to the river.
Other notable catches included a 26lbs salmon off the Ballathie beat, a 25lbs off Newtyle, a 23lbs off Benchil and a 22lbs off Dalmarnock beat.
Several beats recorded good individual day catches which is very encouraging for the weeks to come. They included Stobhall, Cargil, Newtyle, Catholes and Luncarty, and Waulkmill amongst others.

The river temperature has now dropped to around 54 degrees Fahrenheit or 12 degrees Celsius.

There is no doubt the river is having a very hard season and a number of anglers are responding by returning the majority of the salmon they catch. The Tay would like to thank you for that which will hopefully show benefits for the future.

May I remind anglers coming to the Tay about the Catch and Release policy which is that all hen salmon and sea trout caught should be returned and large male salmon over 15 pounds to preserve sport for the future. It goes without saying that all red fish should de returned as well.

If you have any news or pictures of catches or experiences on the Tay and you would like to share them please email me on stanley.fishing@ukonline.co.uk
Thank you for the contributions so far
.

Alistair Sheach from Kirkcaldy with a sea liced 23 pounds salmon from the Benchil beat of the lower Tay at Stanley, Perthshire, Scotland caught on a red devon spinning from the bank. The prize salmon was returned to the river.
Prospects for the week commencing 28th September 2009.
The river has dropped to a good height for most beats. Again the weather for this coming week looks settled. Hopefully any showers will not be too heavy to alter the river levels.
Last week reported reasonable catch for the season so far so let us hope this continues over the next few weeks and there is a late surge of autumn salmon.

The run has strengthened so prospects look much better going into the last week of September.

The water temperature is now just below 54 degrees Fahrenheit or 12 degrees Celsius with all the rain and fresh water.

The river is running at a good height which will allow salmon to run the entire river Tay.

There is good availability throughout the river so why not have a go.

As to methods, the river is settled and at a good height, the most likely method of catching Tay Salmon this week will favour all methods with settled water. There will certainly be good conditions for fly fishing with a higher river temperature now encouraging floating lines. Spinning from boat and bank are also favoured.. The rise in river temperature should encourage baits spun upstream and retrieved quickly.

Finally all anglers are reminded that the Tay's policy for Catch and Release in 2009 we now recommend that every angler should release all hen salmon caught each day and all Sea Trout. We also recommend that all male salmon over 15 pounds should be released and certainly any red fish . Salmon are an extremely precious resource. Please do what you can to ensure their numbers are allowed to conserve them and produce more salmon for the future.

If you have any news or pictures of catches or experiences on the Tay and you would like to share them please email me on stanley.fishing@ukonline.co.uk

This is a picture of a Guillemot which was floating down the river today. These birds are not normally in the river. They have been blown over from the west in the high winds and they use the river to get back to the sea. This one was very exhausted and could not fly. We have seen quite a few recently going down stream.

Salmon Fishing Scotland Catching Autumn Salmon September 2009.

Frank Muller had a memorable day on the Benchil beat today (18/09/2009) below Stanley, Perthshire, Scotland.
In the morning he caught an 8 pounds salmon on a Toby. Then in the afternoon he successfully landed 2 lovely fresh salmon in the Long shot pool on floating devon. Both salmon were released and weighed 9 and 15 pounds. Remarkably one of the salmon all ready had a toby in its mouth which had been lost earlier by another angler on the river. The lures were carefully removed and the salmon was released.

Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Autumn report and prospects September 2009.

Tay Reports

Weekly Report for week ending 12th September 2009.

Last week reported 215 Salmon and 7 Sea Trout which was the best weekly catch for the season so far despite a spate at the start of the week and lost fishing on Tuesday. The weather at last settled down and we had a high pressure giving us a chance to fish the river without a spate coming the day after.

There were other fish being caught and not reported. Not reported was at least 50 salmon being caught off the Stormont Angling club water just above Perth. There does now seem to be a good spread of Salmon throughout the district and at last a far stronger run with Grilse in the main stem of the river.

Best salmon of the week was a fantastic 36lbs salmon off the Kercock beat.
Other notable catches included a 23lbs salmon off the Islamouth beat and 25 and 22lbs salmon off the Cargil beat.
Several beats recorded good individual day catches which is very encouraging for the weeks to come. They included Luncarty and Catholes, Cargil, Upper Scone, Fishponds, Islamouth, Waulkmill and Benchil and Pitlochrie amongst others.
The river in general has picked up this last week which is heartening after a lean spell over the last few weeks

This past week saw a spread of catches throughout the river which certainly looks good for the coming weeks. The Grilse run still has improved but hopefully will get better in the coming weeks. Encouragingly there are quite a lot of good salmon running the river.

The river temperature has now dropped just below 60 degrees Fahrenheit or 15 degrees Celsius due to all the rain.

May I remind anglers coming to the Tay about the Catch and Release policy which is that all hen salmon and sea trout caught should be returned and large male salmon over 15 pounds to preserve sport for the future. It goes without saying that all red fish should be returned as well.
