Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Salmon Fishing Report for the Week ending 28th July 2012.

Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Salmon Fishing Report for the Week ending 28th July 2012.

The catches improved last week with settled conditions to give the best rand if that recorded catch of the season so far but everyone had to work hard to gain this. The weather improved thankfully and we need that to remain to maintain good sport this week as grilse and top quality summer salmon continuing to run the river. The quality of salmon remained high with fish up to 23 pounds in weight, this was again encouraging and hopefully will continue with good prospects for the coming week.

Conditions were good throughout the week but still everyone had to work hard for success. River levels dropped during the week and have now settled back nicely. The water levels remain just above summer level encouraging salmon to run the river and a strengthening of the run is expected to improve catches further. The river will be settled for the start of the coming week and the fresh water should continue to spice things up for some good sport. The quality was again exceptional with lots of sea liced fish caught and more multi sea winter salmon landed. Salmon continue to be caught from top to bottom in the river with others caught and not registered meaning fish are running through rapidly and progressing upstream which encourages everyone.

There were 213 salmon and 15 sea trout reported with the largest salmon an impressive 23 pounds on the Almondmouth beat. Salmon were landed throughout the system from the Lower River to the Upper River.

Beat catches reported
(week ending 28th July)

Total: 213 Largest: Almondmouth 23lbs
SEA TROUT: Benchil and Pitlochrie 1, Stobhall 1, Taymount 2, Lower and Upper Islamouth 4, Murthly 2 3, Newtyle 1, Lower Kinnaird 1.
Total: 13 Largest: Taymount & Lower and Upper Islamouth 4lbs

On the Lower River 134 salmon were landed. This was a more encouraging catch for the week and it was spread throughout the whole lower river from Almondmouth to Islamouth. All the lower beats had success and if conditions settle this will improve over the coming weeks as the run strengthens. Almondmouth continued their recent success with a steady week and a best day of 12 on Monday; they also had the largest fish of the week weighing 23 pounds. Waulkmill, Lower Redgorton, Fishponds and Upper Redgorton all produced fish but as the salmon start to slow down their catches will improve more over the coming weeks. Upper Scone and Pitlochrie and Benchil had reasonable weeks catching on most days. On Upper Scone George Maison enjoyed good success at the end of the week on the fly landing 2 from the Long Shot on Benchil then catching a cracking 17 pounds salmon from Horsey on the Pitlochrie beat on Saturday. On the opposite days Tom Jennings party also enjoyed success. Sam Halliday landed his first ever salmon on Monday on a spinner then on Wednesday caught his first ever salmon fly fishing from the boat in Horsey on the Pitlochrie beat. Tom Jennings also landed salmon on the fly and spinner. Taymount and Stobhall caught consistently throughout the week landing salmon on most days. Kath Giles enjoyed a good day on Tuesday landing salmon on the spinner and fly on Taymount. Sport was improving at Ballathie and Cargill with dropping water levels.
Rob Campbell from South Africa had an eventful week on Cargill landing salmon up to 16 pounds and loosing several others. Islamouth had another good week landing several salmon fly fishing. There is a real feeling if the weather settles down and the river runs at a consistent height the sport will be tremendous, as there seems to be a good run on and this will strengthen over the next few weeks.

The Middle River registered 47. All the middle beats are enjoying good sport but are praying from continued settled conditions. Kercock had 7 for the week with Richard Goddard catching his first on fly at 7 pounds, Robert Sneddon had a bigger fish at 15 pounds and Graham Fyffe with a 17 pounds beauty. Murthly 2 enjoyed a good week landing 25 salmon for the week from the Upper beat and Stenton.
At Newtyle Ian Hendry and Mark McGillivray caught their first salmon from the beat.
At Dalmarnock Billy Marsland landed 2 salmon up to 16 pounds on Tuesday from the boat with ghillie Gordon Pollock.

The Upper River produced 28. The upper beats continue to enjoy sport with salmon and grilse running through the system and all the upper beats are benefiting from this registering salmon on a regular basis. Dalguise enjoyed a good start to the week landing 5 on Monday. The Kinnaird beats continue to enjoy good sport landing salmon up to 13 pounds this past week mostly on fly. Further salmon were landed from Edradynate, Weem and the Farleyer beats. The fish ladder on the Tummel at Pitlochry is now over 3500 and salmon continue to be caught on the club water at Portnacraig.

The Isla registered 4 salmon all from Keithick Mains.

The Earn registered 1 from Upper Aberuthven.

Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Salmon Fishing Prospects for week commencing 30th July 2012.

Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Salmon Fishing Prospects for week commencing 30th July 2012.

The river was settled last week and has dropped back to a good level. The catches improved with good conditions and we saw the best return of the year so far. The fresher water should encourage more salmon and grilse to run and should give the river a great chance of producing more good sport. If the weather remains settled the river will see it’s true potential.

Summer Salmon fly fishing on the Lower Tay Pitlochrie beat at Stanley, Perthshire, Scotland.
The weather is to be reasonably settled at the start of the week but rain is expected from Wednesday but hopefully not to unsettle the river, which should give excellent prospects of sport on the river. There might be a chance of a fresh fish anywhere in the river and hopefully the run will strengthen after fresh water to give us even more success. Grilse are now more evident in the system and Multi sea winter salmon continue to be caught, which is very encouraging. The prospect of a large salmon is a real possibility with big fish continuing to be caught over the last few weeks.

As to methods, in settled conditions and warmer river temperatures fishing by any method will be varied to catch the elusive Tay salmon. Fly fishing with a floating line and a sink tip is recommended with smaller tubes or a dressed fly. It is always worth a go with a Sun Ray as well. Spinning from the bank with Devons and Tobies are a good bet. It is even worth a go with a flying C or an upstream Toby as the fish become more active in warmer water.

Finally you are reminded that the Tay's catch and release policy for 2012.
From 1 June to end of Season:
• All hen fish of any size and all cock fish over 10 pounds should be released.
• All coloured and gravid fish to be released.
• No more than one clean fish weighing, where possible, less than 10 pounds should be retained per angler per day.
• Anglers should not use worms in September or October in any part of the district.
Worming in June, July and August
Please adhere to these recommendations and help preserve the long term future of the river and your sport.
Come and visit the Ghillies fun day TODAY.
All welcome.

To help you follow our guidelines I have included these helpful pointers

How to SAFELY Release a Salmon
“The best method of releasing a salmon is to leave it in the water
and touch nothing but the hook with fingers or pliers. When taking a picture, lift the fish from the water with wet hands, quickly take the picture and return it immediately back to the water.
“Whatever the method, care combined with speed, will give the fish the best chance of survival.”

Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Salmon Fishing Report for the Week ending 21st July 2012.

The catches improved last week despite a mid week wash out after yet another torrential downpour on Wednesday.

There were 171 salmon and 16 sea trout reported with the largest salmon an impressive 22 pounds on the Cargill beat. Salmon were landed throughout the system from the Lower River to the Upper River.

The river was hit by yet more torrential rain last week but it has now settled back and the current weather pattern is settled for the coming week, which is far better news. The catches were good for the past week despite fluctuating conditions, especially on Saturday with 39 registered. The fresher water should encourage salmon and grilse to run and should give the river a great chance of producing more good sport. If the weather settles down the river will see it’s true potential.

Summer and Autumn Salmon fishing on the Tay in Perthshire, Scotland.

The weather is to remain settled this week with the chance of rain at the end but hopefully it will not unsettle the river and maintain excellent prospects of sport on the river. There might be a chance of a fresh fish anywhere in the river and hopefully the run will be maintained after fresh water to give us even more success. Grilse are now more evident in the system and Multi sea winter salmon continue to be caught, which is very encouraging. The prospect of a large salmon is a real possibility after a bigger fish appeared over the last few weeks.

Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Salmon Fishing Report for the Week ending 7th July 2012.

Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Salmon Fishing Report for the Week ending 7th July 2012.

The catches were good last week under the circumstances of continual unsettled conditions from yet another dreadful summers weeks weather. If the weather settles the potential of good sport is very high with an increase in grilse and top quality summer salmon continuing to run the river. The quality of salmon remained high with fish up to 28 pounds in weight, this was again encouraging and hopefully will continue with good prospects for the coming week.

Conditions varied throughout the week with the unsettled weather. River levels fluctuated from day to day after more heavy rain showers. The water levels remained above summer level encouraging salmon to run the river and a few more grilse are now appearing in the catches. The river should settle nicely for the start of the coming week and the fresh water should spice things up for some good sport. The quality was again exceptional with lots of sea liced fish caught and more multi sea winter salmon landed. Salmon continue to be caught from top to bottom in the river with others caught and not registered meaning fish are running through rapidly and progressing upstream which encourages everyone.

There were 107 salmon and 18 sea trout reported with the largest salmon an impressive 28 pounds sea liced beauty caught by Robert Russell on the Upper Scone Benchil beat just below Stanley. Salmon were landed throughout the system from the Lower River to the Upper River.

Beat catches reported
(week ending 7th July)
SALMON & GRILSE: Almondmouth 8, Waulkmill 1, Lower Redgorton 4, Luncarty 1, Upper Redgorton 3, Fishponds 3, Benchil and Pitlochrie 3, Upper Scone 3, Stobhall 5, Taymount 1, Ballathie 3, Cargill 1, Islamouth 6, Lower and Upper Islamouth 8, Upper Islamouth and Meikleour House 2, Kercock 5, Newtyle 3, Dunkeld House 6, Dalmarnock 7, Edradynate 3, Farleyer Upper 9, Farleyer Lower 4, Upper Aberuthven 1, Portnacraig Pitlochry 13, Loch Faskally 4.
Total: 107 Largest: Upper Scone 28lbs
SEA TROUT: Lower Redgorton 6, Luncarty 1, Upper Redgorton 2, Benchil and Pitlochrie 2, Upper Scone 1, Catholes 3, Ballathie 1, Dunkeld House 2.
Total: 18 Largest: Lower Redgorton & Benchil and Pitlochrie & Catholes & Ballathie & Dunkeld House 3lbs

On the Lower River 50 salmon were landed. This was a more encouraging for the week as the catch was spread throughout the whole lower river from Almondmouth to Islamouth. All the lower beats had success and if conditions settle this will improve over the coming weeks as the run strengthens. Almondmouth caught consistently and further upstream Lower Redgorton had success with Howard Jones enjoying good sport on the fly. Fishponds and Waulkmill also caught fly fishing fresh salmon up to 15 pounds with a few being lost as well as the salmon run quickly through the lower reaches. Perth and District members had success at Upper Scone with Robert Russell landing a fish of a lifetime on Benchil weighing an estimated 28 pounds from the Plain Water on a flying C. On Pitlochrie and Benchil fly fishing accounted for 3 salmon during the week. Further above Stanley, Stobhall had a reasonable week but the higher water did not help Cargill and Ballathie. Islamouth produced a few fish but could also do with the river levels dropping and settling. On Islamouth at the end of the week a Norwegian enjoyed good sport with Bjorn Wicklund landing a superb 25 pounds beauty caught on the fly in the Longhead pool and colleague Anders Hoen, catching his first Tay salmon weighing 16 pounds fly fishing from the boat in the Newshot pool.

The Middle River registered 23. The middle beats produced on a regular basis throughout the week. At Kercock there was 5 caught during the week.
Tony Griffiths accounted for two salmon fly fishing with the biggest a lovely sea liced 12 pounds salmon. Both fish fell to a Tay Raider fly.
At Newtyle Calum McRoberts was successful catching an 11 pounds beauty on a Rapala.
A salmon from Dunkeld.
Further upstream Dunkeld House continued their good spell landing 6 for the week. Dalmarnock also did well especially at the start of the week catching 3 on Monday and Tuesday.

The Upper River produced 33. The upper areas are certainly benefiting from all the rain and good water levels with the Edradynate and Farleyer beats continuing to enjoy good sport. The Tummel has seen sport increase with the water coming up, the Portnacraig beat below the dam caught several salmon during the week.
Gordon Nichol caught salmon 4 days in a row, which is good going and Steven Watt caught 3 to his own rod on Saturday all fly fishing. The counter is now way over 3000 at the Pitlochry Dam.

The Isla registered 0.

The Earn registered 1 from Upper Aberuthven.

The Tay Conservation Dinner will be held at the Dunkeld Hilton Hotel on Saturday 20th October 2012.

Celebrate a Tay spring salmon with a Dalmore Tay Dram and contribute to the future of this mighty river. Dalmore distillery have created a unique expression of their single malt whisky and a generous donation from each bottle sold will be gifted to the Tay Foundation to support their work to protect and improve the river.

Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Salmon Fishing Report for the Week ending 30th June 2012.

Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Salmon Fishing Report for the Week ending 30th June 2012.

The catches were good last week until torrential rain on Thursday spoiled the end of the week virtually wiping out catches with a big dirty spate. The quality of salmon remained high with fish up to 32 pounds in weight, this was again encouraging and hopefully will continue with good prospects for the coming week.

Settled conditions form the start of the week saw good catches on most days as the river settled down but unfortunately the area was hit by torrential rain on Thursday and the river rose rapidly into a dirty spate wiping out Friday and Saturday, even the Scone Gamefair was cancelled on Saturday and Sunday. The water levels remained above summer level encouraging salmon to run the river and a few grilse are now appearing in the catches.

There were 75 salmon and 18 sea trout reported with the largest salmon an impressive 32 pounds caught on the Upper Farleyer beat on the fly by Gordon Stewart. Salmon were landed throughout the system from the Lower River to the Upper River. Sea trout catches have improved.

Beat catches reported
(week ending 30th June)
SALMON & GRILSE: Luncarty 1, Stobhall 7, Taymount 4, Ballathie 2, Cargill 6, Islamouth 1, Lower and Upper Islamouth 13, Kercock 5, Murthly 1 1, Newtyle 1, Dunkeld House 7, Dalguise 2, Lower Kinnaird 5, Edradynate 3, Farleyer Upper 4, Farleyer Lower 1, Keithick Mains 1, Coupar Grange 5, Portnacraig Pitlochry 1, Loch Faskally 5.
Total: 75 Largest: Farleyer Upper 32lbs
SEA TROUT: Lower Redgorton 1, Luncarty 6, Benchil and Pitlochrie 3, Catholes 1, Stobhall 2, Taymount 1, Dunkeld House 1, Coupar Grange 1, Portnacraig Pitlochry 2.
Total: 18 Largest: Benchil and Pitlochrie & Portnacraig Pitlochry 4lbs

On the Lower River 34 salmon were landed. The unsettled water did not help the lower river this past week especially on the last few days. At the start of the week catches were reasonable with Islamouth catching 13 but the increased water levels made life a bit more difficult after the good catches of recent weeks. Sport was wiped out at the end of the week. The beats above Stanley had reasonable sport until the spate arrived on Friday and amongst the returns have been some good quality Grilse, which is heartening. The beats below Stanley continue to struggle with the exception of sea trout. Hopefully this will change now July has arrived and fish start to slow down and give everyone a chance.

The Middle River registered 14. Sport was sporadic again with the fluctuating water levels. At Kercock 5 were landed for the week with Wilson Comrie landing a lovely 8 pounds fish on the fly and Alex Henderby caught a 15 pounds fish on a devon. Dunkeld House had another good week landing 7 salmon.
Jack Hood was very pleased with a 14 pounds salmon after loosing a further 3 during the day and this was his first ever salmon. Other successful anglers included John Cranston with a lovely 10 pounds fish from the Cutty Stone.
At Newtyle Calum McRoberts had a cracking 9 pounds salmon fly fishing the tail of the Cotter on Wednesday with a further 2 lost on the beat on the same day.

The Upper River produced 21. Sport continued on the upper area with the beats landing fish on a regular basis. The outstanding catch came from Upper Farleyer, which continues to have a good season. Gordon Stewart, who is a regular on the beat having caught a 20 pounds salmon earlier in the season caught a superb 32 pounds salmon fly fishing in the Junction pool with the Lyon and landing it a fair bit further down river after a tremendous battle on a self tied Munroe. Hopefully there will be pictures of this magnificent salmon, which is a potential Malloch Trophy winner for the river. Lower Kinnaird continued producing good salmon with Australian visitor Gary Johncock being one of the successful rods landing a 7 pounds beauty on the fly. Grilse have also been reported here as they filter upstream. Salmon continue the stream through the Dam at Pitlochry with the total at over 2700. This is benefiting Loch Faskally with 5 reported.

The Isla registered 6. Coupar Grange caught 5 and 1 from Keithick Mains.

Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Salmon Fishing Prospects for week commencing 2nd July 2012.

The river is settling back after torrential rain at the end of the week. The catches were reasonable up until Thursday but the unsettled river wiped out sport virtually for the last 2 days with odd fish caught in the upper areas on Saturday. The fresher water should encourage salmon and sea trout to run and should still give the river a great chance of producing more good sport.

Multi sea winter spring salmon continue to be caught as well which is very encouraging and the prospect of a large salmon is a real possibility after a few bigger fish appeared over the last few weeks and June was always a big fish mouth on the Tay over the years.
