Salmon Fishing Scotland February 2009 Spring Fishing on the Tay.

Salmon Fishing Scotland February 2009 Spring Fishing on the Tay.

This is a picture of a record day on the Pitlochrie beat at Stanley, Perthshire, Scotland on the 5th April 1913. The 13 salmon were landed by M Bedford from Wobern and weighed 191.5 pounds. They were all caught fly fishing from the boat in Pitlochrie pool or the Wash House. The lady caught them all casting the fly and not Harling! The fly in question was a "Black Dog" and the rod she used was 18'1 and i bet weighed a ton compared with our modern light weight rods.
Not only did M Bedford have a red letter day in April but over a 23 day spell at Stanley she landed 102 Atlantic salmon all casting with a total weight of 1503.5 pounds with the largest being 29 pounds, 18 of these weighed 20 pounds and over and 51 weighed 16 pounds and over.

Back to today. This was Hester Carro and Giles Bromley-Martin casting from the bank on the Catholes beat. We did not catch any fresh salmon but saw a couple jumping as they made their journey upstream. There must have been a small run going through the lower Tay as Stobhall accounted for 3 fresh fish today immediately above us. Maybe tomorrow!

This was the woodside today (18/02/2009) on the Catholes on the lower Tay at Stanley, Perthshire, Scotland where we saw the fresh salmon jumping.

It is a sad day when we talk about only seeing a fish. The river is crying out for more hatcheries.

Did Geordie ghillie for M. Bedford in 1913?
