Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Opening Day 15th January 2009.

River Tay: Opening Day – January 15th
Competition for the Redford Trophy

The River Tay opens for the 2009 season on Thursday January 15th.
Anglers will be competing on the River Tay that day to win the famous Redford Trophy. The Redford Trophy has been awarded annually for over 20 years to the angler who catches the heaviest salmon from the river on opening day from Loch Tay to the lowest beat.

The winner will be presented with the Redford Trophy at the River Tay Conservation Dinner on June 11 at the Ballathie House Hotel. In addition to winning the coveted trophy the winner will receive a £250 tackle voucher from Robert Jamieson, the owner of Crockart's Gunmakers and FishingTackle shop in Blairgowrie and a spring day for 2 on the River Tay, courtesy of Stanley Fishings.

Details of entry:
1. All entries should be submitted by 5pm to the Redford Trophy administrators James Crockhart and Sons in Allan Street, Blairgowrie, who administer the Redford Trophy on behalf of the friends of the late Ian Redford who owned the Newtyle beat of the Tay. Crockharts will accept measurements ratified by a ghillie or fellow angler, as proof of capture.
2. Fish should be weighed either in special nets with scales built into them, or with a scale and net, weighing the salmon in the net before releasing it and then deduct the weight of the net.
3. Fish can and should also be measured in cm (by tape) to record the salmon's length from the nose to the fork of its tail, and the girth at a point just above the dorsal fin.
4. A formula, recommended by the Freshwater Fisheries Laboratory at Pitlochry, has been worked out which calculates the weight of a salmon by using these measurements. Once the length and girth measurements are entered the weight is calculated. (for further details access the website www.letsflyfish.com and click on 'conservation'. (Please note that where there is no computer access entries can be telephoned through to Crockharts at 01250 872056
before 5 p.m. on the 15th and the calculations will be done by them.
5. All entries must conform to the TDSFB guidelines on catch and
release.
