Salmon Fishing Scotland river Tay, Perthshire, Scotland Report for week ending 1st June 2013.

Salmon Fishing Scotland river Tay, Perthshire, Scotland Report for week ending 1st June 2013.

The conditions last week were good on the Tay in Perthshire, Scotland with good weather after a blip on Monday giving us a mini spate but then we had a falling steady river, superb catches were maintained during the week with more multi sea winter salmon filling everyone with even more optimism for the coming weeks. The weather is now much warmer and there is a good forecast for this week that hopefully will continue to give us great prospects and will maintain sport on this marvelous river and spread it throughout the whole river.
Summer has now arrived and when settled conditions prevail sport can be magical as has proved this season so far with some outstanding catches and numerous spring salmon registered in the Tay system above expectation, let us hope the sport is maintained for the remainder of the season then it will certainly be one to remember in years to come. The press and TV have even been acknowledging our success. The catches have been heartening mainly due to the cold weather originally in the early part of the season but there is certainly evidence now that there has been a far better run. Could this be down to most anglers’ efforts to return spring salmon over the past few seasons? Thank you to all anglers who have this season so far returned their spring salmon to maintain our sport for the future, it is vitally important and is a great contribution by individuals who care for their sport and the river. Well done!

27 pounds fish from Cargill.
Salmon were caught all week up to an impressive 27 pounds in weight and throughout the river as temperatures rise, which was tremendous news. The catches for the season so far have increased by 75% up to the end of May and now May has produced a 90% increase on last year which is simply amazing news for the river. The Tay is currently fishing very well and is certainly a good destination to catch your first salmon of the season; you will maybe catch a fish of your dreams after the emergence of some monster salmon. The river offers a variety of possibilities for all standards of anglers with ghillies only too keen to teach the novices and this mighty river can produce a memorable salmon for the keen fly fisher. Levels and temperatures have now risen hopefully to encourage more salmon to run the river and spread out. Pools can be easily covered from bank and boat with modern technology. Why not have a go and sample this magical river. The fishing is supreme and the scenery is not bad either. Currently the Blue bells are out along the river with also numerous other wild flowers. Ospreys visit the river on a daily basis and you could see an Otter or a Kingfisher darting past while you are in mid cast! It is true what they say “ a salmon is a bonus!”

Salmon have been caught throughout the system this past week encouraging everyone and there is a continuing emergence of some larger multi sea winter spring salmon up to around 25 odd pounds, which is superb news. Sea trout and odd Grilse are also starting to appear. The Upper reaches are now encountering more fresh salmon as warmer conditions appear. The Upper River registered 8 spring salmon from Farleyer, Edradynate and Findynate. Further news from the upper beats would be welcome for the report.

The Tummel system registered 43 spring salmon. Currently the Tummel is fishing very well with superb conditions and salmon running through the Dam. Currently there is now over 1500 salmon through the ladder. All the salmon came from the Pitlochry Angling stretch at the Dam, the clubs Ruan Ruarie beat and Loch Faskally but other spring salmon were caught on the Tummel system in good numbers but not registered. Loch Faskally produced 18 for the week as salmon slip through the dam at Pitlochry in numbers with fish up to 16 pounds. Gareth Thom, Campbell Dixon and Greg Russel all had doubles when out on the Loch. On the Angling Club stretch Steve Watt got the week off to a flying start landing 4 fish on Monday frim the Dam and the Sawmill stream. Kenneth McGregor also had a good day with 2 fish up to 10 pounds. The Ruan Ruarie beat on the Garry also started to produce as fish fly up river to their final destinations. The clubs Sawmill stream fished extremely well all week and even the ladies got into the act with Fiona Stewart catching a lovely 11 pounds fish. It was another great week.
West Haugh, East Haugh and the Lower Tummel have also been catching and not reporting.

On the Middle river 85 salmon were caught this past week, which was a superb week as temperatures came up and salmon ran after the big water earlier in the month. Lower Kinnaird had a good week with salmon on most days up to 25 pounds in weight. All the salmon were caught on fly with Simon Rutherford doing very well. Dalguise also faired well with Tony McCabe, John Shipley and Jamie Thomson all catching on fly.

On Dalmarnock John Jenkins got the week off to a good start with a 14 pounds fish and then another at 13 pounds. Also successful was Alan Dorrian and Dutch visitors in the week. Dunkeld House had a good week with several fish including catching fish that had been caught before! 2 fish have been caught twice as they tag the fish prior to release.

11 year old Jack Sprosten caught his first ever salmon on the fly from the Cathedral stream in the boat witnessed by his proud Grandfather Peter who also caught in the day making it a memorable experience.

Stuart McArthur had a great day landing 3 fish and Brian Joseph caught a 16 pounds beauty.

Newtyle also had several fish during the week with fish up to 15 pounds. Allan Rennie, Greg Potts, Farquar Murray, Thomas Black, John Wood and Greame Fyfe all caught on fly and Spinner taking the beats total close to 100. The Murthly and Glendelvine beats continue to fish very well with another superb week. Glendelvine had a day of 11 while the Murthly beats have now caught 224 for the spring and over 150 have been on the fly. Superb result!

Stephen O’Neill had a cracker from the top beat in the week on the fly.

On Saturday Johnston Stewart caught a 13 pounds fish fron the bottom beat in the Minister. Kercock had a couple in the week with Bill McInness and Nigel Pearman catching fish to 10 pounds.

The Lower River had good catches as the tremendous run continued through the beats with 55 salmon for the week. Islamouth was again at its productive best throughout the week landing several salmon. The last 3 days saw good catches with James Mayhew landing an 18 pounds beauty from Donnits and James Brookes catching one at 8 pounds from the Newshot. Cargill had a good week with fish up to 27 pounds with Keith Schofields party enjoying a good week as the water dropped away suiting the beat. Stobhall landed a few as well with Lewis Moonie enjoying a week away from London. The lower beats reported odd fish and a few more Sea trout have appeared with hopefully more to come.

The Isla registered 1 salmon from Islabank.
It was certainly another superb spring week to remember with some great stories, at last some warmer weather and springers caught with good conditions but now as we entering May with warmer weather and good river levels the spring catches will hopefully be maintained over the coming weeks assuming the run continues and spread throughout the entire system. Please maintain the Catch and Release code for the river to protect our sport for the future.
