Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Reports and Prospects February 2009.
Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Reports and Prospects February 2009.
Tay Reports
Weekly Report.
Last week saw the Tay get its best week of the season with around 30 salmon reported up to 26 pounds. Congratulations to Ardeonaig on Loch Tay for catching this lovely 3 sea winter fish and on having their best catches in January and now February in at least the last 5 years. There would be a few others caught as well but not reported. The encouraging news was that salmon were caught throughout the whole system and fish were seen running certainly on the lower river. The rise in temperatures has encouraged salmon to run hence fish were caught in Loch Tay, the Tummel, the Ericht and Isla. The temperatures are to remain similar this coming week so the catches should remain well spread. I would predict the catches will improve this coming week as well.
Prospects for the week.
As of Monday morning the prospects on the Tay look very good after a better week and the river will be continuing to drop and is running at a good height. The forecast for the week remains mild with little chance of frost at night and temperatures up to 10 degrees during the day. The water temperature has risen to about 40 degrees Fahrenheit or 4 degrees Celsius enabling salmon to run. There could be catches throughout the whole system again this coming week. Fresh salmon are certainly entering the river and running hard as they have been seen on the lower river on a regular basis at the end of last week.
I would predict much better catches this coming week. There is good availability throughout the river so why not have a go.
As to methods, the most likely method of catching a Springer in the Tay this week will favour all methods with settled water. There will certainly be better conditions for fly fishing and spinning from boat and bank. Harling or on some beats spinning from the bank remains a favoured method on the Tay.
Finally all anglers are reminded that the Tay's policy for spring 2009 is that every angler should release the first salmon caught each day, and then no more than one Springer should be taken per day. Spring salmon are a precious resource. Please do what you can to ensure their numbers are allowed to conserve them and produce more spring salmon for the future.

Fly Fishing in Horsey late on a spring day in February. We had 2 Kelts today (19/02/2009) fly fishing from the bank. The beats above us had fresh salmon so it would appear that the milder conditions have started a small run of spring salmon. The air temperature over the last few days was up at 10 degrees and the water temperature has risen to 2 degrees.

Salmon Fishing Scotland February 2009 Spring Fishing on the Tay.
This is a picture of a record day on the Pitlochrie beat at Stanley, Perthshire, Scotland on the 5th April 1913. The 13 salmon were landed by M Bedford from Wobern and weighed 191.5 pounds. They were all caught fly fishing from the boat in Pitlochrie pool or the Wash House. The lady caught them all casting the fly and not Harling! The fly in question was a "Black Dog" and the rod she used was 18'1 and i bet weighed a ton compared with our modern light weight rods.
Not only did M Bedford have a red letter day in April but over a 23 day spell at Stanley she landed 102 Atlantic salmon all casting with a total weight of 1503.5 pounds with the largest being 29 pounds, 18 of these weighed 20 pounds and over and 51 weighed 16 pounds and over.
Back to today. This was Hester Carro and Giles Bromley-Martin casting from the bank on the Catholes beat. We did not catch any fresh salmon but saw a couple jumping as they made their journey upstream. There must have been a small run going through the lower Tay as Stobhall accounted for 3 fresh fish today immediately above us. Maybe tomorrow!
This was the woodside today (18/02/2009) on the Catholes on the lower Tay at Stanley, Perthshire, Scotland where we saw the fresh salmon jumping.

These are typical tube flies for the spring. They will be in my Salmon fly shop in the next few days. They are all aluminium tubes and come in 3 different sizes. (2 inch, 1.5 inches and 1 inch) They are all aluminium tubes to enable you to cast larger flies easily. It is better to have lighter tubes but use fast sinking leaders to take the fly down on the various fly lines available in cold water. Also only use a short leader of about 2 to 3 feet to get the fly to turn over.

Salmon Fishing Scotland Fly Fishing at Stanley on the Tay Spring 2009.
Spring fly fishing on the Tay at Stanley, Perthshire, Scotland and not a cloud in the sky. The temperature however was fairly cold. It was -5 degrees Celsius when day break came in and the water temperature never rose above 1 degree all day. The plus point at the moment is that we do not have grue coming down the river unlike the Dee. There are some good fresh salmon entering the river. Jimmy Last down at Waulkmill had another salmon today (10/02/2009) and Taymount had a cracking 14 pounder. These cold temperatures certainly favour the lower Tay.

Alistair Dunbar fly fishing from the boat in the Black stones. After we fished the Black stones we fly fished the Erics pool on the Stanley Bank and hooked a good spring salmon on a Temple Dog fly which fell off near the net. The conditions despite being very cold are ideal for fly fishing at the moment. Today the water temperature was very close to 34 degrees Fahrenheit or 1 degrees Celsius which will definitely slow any salmon down. Further downstream there was a 16 pounds fresh salmon caught on the fly Harling in the Horsey pool of the Pitlochrie beat and 2 salmon caught on the fly at Waulkmill harling as well.

The fresh spring salmon was successfully landed on a Rapala then carefully returned to the river.
Conditions for this coming week could not be better for the famous Stanley beats with cold weather and low river temperatures. On Friday and Saturday the water temperature was 35 degrees Fahrenheit of 1.5 degrees Celsius which should slow any salmon down when entering the river Tay. Not only that, with falling river heights the possibility of catching on the fly increases dramatically. A wet 2 or an intermediate with a fast sinking leader should be the correct tactics with a good sized fly.

This was Andy Murray fishing a Rapala out of the boat in the Black Stones of the Catholes beat at Stanley, Perthshire, Scotland. There was a Rawner caught up under the weir today. (06/02/2009) On our other beat at Benchil a lovely fresh 15 pounds spring salmon was caught and a nice 9 pounds springer was caught at Burnmouth. Both salmon were released back to the river.

This was the scene at Stanley, Perthshire, Scotland today on the river Tay. The river was dirty again from the snow melt but should be clear for tomorrow. Hopefully there will be a springer about in the cold conditions.

Salmon Fishing Scotland February 2009 Spring Fishing on the Tay.
This was the scene at Stanley, Perthshire, Scotland today (04/02/2009)on the river Tay.
The river was not ideal below the mouth of the Isla as there was a snow melt coming down the river making the prospects difficult. This colour takes quite a few days to go out of the river. The one plus is the cold conditions which should hold the salmon back. The temperatures are much colder this year which should enable us to have good spring catches.

This was a superb Spring Salmon caught on the Benchil beat today (03/02/2009) in the Aitken Head pool on the lower Tay below Stanley, Perthshire, Scotland. John Murray landed the prize salmon of 15 pounds caught on a Kynoch harling from the boat. The fish was carefully returned.
Congratulations to Jim Fisher from Glasgow who completed a opening day double salmon from two rivers in Scotland and they were both caught fly fishing. Firstly Jim caught this lovely fresh 17 pounds salmon on the Tummel on the opening day of the Tay System in Perthshire then yesterday on the Dee at Ballogie in Aberdeenshire he caught a fresh 21 pounds salmon. Both salmon were returned. Well done Jim.

Salmon Fishing Scotland Spring February 2009.
This was the scene outside the hut on the Catholes this morning (02/02/2009) at Stanley, Perthshire, Scotland. A wild snow storm.
Alastair Dunbar fly fishing in the Back Dam pool from the boat. He caught a sea trout which was returned.
All the action was up at the weir in the Woodside. Geordie Stewart, our senior Ghillie with 51 years on the river caught a fresh run spring Atlantic salmon of 13 pounds on a devon. He released the salmon back to the river and was unable to take a picture with his phone with all the excitement. The salmon had sea lice on it for good measure. This was a picture of Geordie last year with a springer from Pitlochrie pool which was released as well.

Steve McGrandles fly fishing in Pitlochrie pool at Stanley, Perthshire, Scotland on the river Tay. At this height (between 6 and 7 foot on the Ballathie gauge) it is a tremendous cast from the bank as all the salmon come right into the bank and they are easily covered.
