Salmon Fishing Scotland April 2008 Boat Painting.
Boats off at Stanley.

All the boats at Stanley are off the river at the moment to be painted. We have washed them out and let them dry for 3 weeks and we are now painting them to prepare for July when we will be back guiding on the river again. This is a traditional procedure for the lower Tay at this time of year.
In the mean time the lower river is mostly fished by Summer Permits.
Stanley Fishings still have good availability with permits for Salmon and Sea Trout.
If you are interested please contact myself.

Spring Salmon from Murthly on the Tay.
Ian Scruton returning a fresh Spring Salmon from the lower Murthly beat of the Tay in Perthshire, Scotland. Ian caught the fish Fly Fishing from the bank.
These are Ian's comments below.
I can only pray that these runs of beautiful salmon continue along with the catch and release policy now endorsed by the vast majority of anglers.
We will see the benefits of returning these fish in the next few years and for once the future is starting to look just a little rosy!
I Couldn't have put it any better myself.

Salmon Fishing Scotland Tales from the Salmon King.
Salmon Fishing Scotland Tales from the Salmon King.
This is a small poem by Alistair Sheach as a tribute to Colin Leslie.
His 50 years are in the past,
such wonderful memories are sure to last,
the names of Moore, Rockerfeller and Wragg
whose exploits appeared in the fishing mags,
their names live on as angling legends
and the name of Leslie was the man who helped them.
The gentleman's gentleman always giving attention,
having a dram or two for purely medication,
Colin Leslie every anglers inspiration.

Ian Scruton with the 8 pounds salmon fron the Catholes at Stanley, Perthshire, Scotland.
The Tay Ghillies Association wish to thank Ian Scruton very much for his £600.00 donation which will be put to river improvements on the Tay system. Ian donated 5 rods at Murthly last week for 3 days with the proceeds going to the TGA.
Ian came up for the last 3 days of the week and caught 2 lovely spring salmon on the fly which were both returned. He caught an 8 pounder on the Catholes at Stanley and a 15 pounder at Murthly both fly fishing. The Tay Ghillies are greatly indebted to generous anglers such as Ian. Thank you once again.

Salmon Fishing Scotland April 2008 Spring Fishing on the Tay.
Salmon Fishing Scotland April 2008 Spring Fishing on the Tay.
Interesting Day on the Pitlochrie beat at Stanley.
To-day was a hard day at the river not helped by the Hydro messing about with the water heights. This was reflected in the river catches to-day with only 6 reported as opposed to 25 yesterday. We managed to catch one spring salmon from the horsey pool on the Pitlochrie beat at Stanley, Perthshire, Scotland. It weighed 9lbs and was caught by Chris Hartley. The fresh salmon was quickly returned to the river unharmed.
This picture was Sarney Wedge diving into the boat first thing this morning!
This is the Osprey which flew over the boat this afternoon and was spotted for the first time this year.
The Sandmartins also appeared at the same time as the Osprey. Is this the start of Summer-I do not think so the the current weather forecast for the next few days-snow from the north. This should cool the water temperature down as it reached 44 degrees to-day which does not help the lower beats of the Tay. If the water temperature rises quickly the salmon will run faster and there will be less of a chance of catching on the lower river.

After the big rise in the water yesterday the river started to settle back nicely to-day. There were 2 fish lost in the morning and the rest of the day was hard work with little activity. However Neil French rescued the day and successfully landed a fresh 9lbs spring salmon from the Horsey pool late in the day spinning a devon from the bank. The salmon was released back to the river.
