After the sighting of several Guillemots on the river over the last few weeks to-day (27/09/2007) a Great Skua came floating past. This is a sea bird and is very much out of context on the Tay. This was what it felt like to-day on the river. The salmon were not keen to take anything. The river was still unsettled from the rise in water yesterday and there was a small rise from the Ericht and Isla this morning which certainly put the fish off the take. To-morrow is another day and hopefully we will be successful either fly fishing or spinning.

How do I start thanking you for tying those little beauties. I bought some from you to try on our little spate river, The Snizort, here on Skye. Deadly that's the only word. I've managed seven trips out of about four or five hours each since the beginning of August - 19 salmon and christ alone knows how many sea trout. That works out at nearly 5 salmon per day on normal fishing. The little 12's and 10's trebles work best but only if they are twitched back like pulling a nymph on a stillwater. Spate or normal flows make no difference. Twitch twitch and BANG vicious take ! no messing or plucking tails just BANG. I used to Ghillie the Tay up near Aberfeldy and am used to fishing all day for nowt, I wish I'd had the Raider then. I'll be back for more.

To-day (20/09/2007) I saw two Guillemots flying down the river back to the sea. They had probably been swept inland from the west by high winds. They are sea birds and can not feed inland and thus follow the river down stream until they get back to the sea. In previous years many have died failing to find food and becoming too weak to fly back to the sea. For more information on Guillemots click here.

This is a fine Autumn salmon caught at Benchil to-day (19/09/2007)on the lower Tay at Stanley Perthshire Scotland. The fish was caught fly fishing and is a typical Tay fish.
It is short and has a good girth.

These are two typical Autumn salmon from the Tay caught on the Benchil beat of the lower river. The smaller fish is very fresh and is a Grilse of about six pounds. As the season goes on the Grilse tend to get larger because they have spent more time feeding in the sea. It has been known for Grilse to weigh up to fifteen pounds by the end of the Tay season in mid october as they are later in arriving in the river. The Larger cock salmon with the Autumn characteristics is a two sea winter fish weighing sixteen pounds and has been in the river for a week or so.

This was a Grilse I caught myself this afternoon fly fishing in the woodside pool of the Pitlochrie beat. It was very fresh as the sea lice indicate but it had a bleeding vent as do several others that are being caught. I am currently collecting data of these type of fish for our fishery board scientist to analyse.

Three fresh salmon caught from the Skellies on the Benchil beat of the lower Tay at Stanley Perthshire Scotland to-day 05/09/07. The water height was six inches which made it worth while having go on this low water stretch. The result was terrific. Michael Watts also caught a salmon further down the beat in the Morning fly fishing in the Long shot pool in the boat. A day to remember.
