Methven Castle offers fishers a unique experience and you will be sure of a warm welcome at this 17th century, privately-owned castle in the heart of Perthshire. Your group will be the only guests staying in the castle so you can expect a very personal service.

This family home offers flexible accommodation with preferential rates to fishers. Choose to stay in the castle on a B&B basis or in the charming newly-built self-catering Tudor oak-framed cottage in the castle garden. Rooms in the castle are ensuite with complimentary Arran Arromatics, TV, and tea and coffee making facilities. The cottage has 2 comfortable ensuite rooms (1 double and 1 twin) and there is also a sofa bed on the upstairs gallery. Larger parties may opt for accommodation in the castle and the cottage.

Fishers will be given a complimentary, daily-changing packed lunch each day to take with them to the river. You can expect delicious homemade soup to accompany your roll or sandwich and there’s always a choice of crisps, chocolate bar or fruit.

Dinner is available as you require from a simple meal to a 4-course dinner. Self-catering guests can also opt to have dinner delivered to the cottage, all ready to be popped into the oven and are welcome to dine in the castle.

Methven Castle hopes to obtain a liquor licence in the foreseeable future. Until then, guests are welcome to bring their own tipples.

A special rate of £100 pppn (normally £150) is available to fishers staying at the castle on a B&B basis. Stay for 5 nights and get the sixth night free including dinner.

The holiday cottage is £400 for per week, for 4 adults. Packed lunches and dinner will be charged as required. Shorter stays may be possible depending on availability.

Prospects for the Tay, Perthshire, Scotland opening week.

There is now only a week until the river Tay opens its salmon fishing season for 2013. Currently the river is running high following yet more rain. Colder and more settled weather is on the horizon at long last giving the river a great chance of producing some good sport and some early "Bars of Silver" on the opening day.

The dawn is about to rise on another salmon fishing season on the Tay.

The weather is to be colder and and far more settled by Wednesday. The water temperature is high for the time year at around 42 degrees Fahrenheit or 5.5 degrees Celcius, which is not ideal for this time of year but this could change by the end of this week. The temperature may come back further with the colder forecast during the week ahead but any salmon that are running may be spread throughout the system after milder conditions prior to the opening day giving everyone a good chance for the coming week. Hopefully there might be a chance of a fresh fish anywhere in the river. There will no doubt be quite a few kelts about on many beats and possibly some later run fish, which have yet to spawn.

As to methods, in settled conditions fishing by any method will have to be slow and deep with large lures to catch the elusive Tay Springer. Harling is also a favoured method at this time of year but be warned wrap up well or it will not be a pleasant experience.

Currently high water on the river but hopefully frost will drop the river back to a good height for the opening day.

Finally you are reminded that the Tay's policy for January - May 2013 is that all spring salmon should be released, i.e. the Tay has adopted a policy of 100% catch and release for spring salmon. Spring salmon are a scarce and precious resource. Please help preserve both them and the long term future of your sport by following the recommendations.

When releasing salmon please try to keep the fish in the water as much as possible to give them every chance to recover prior to release. Releasing fish from boats in the river is not recommended.

Happy New Year to one and all form the Tay in Perthshire, Scotland.

This is the current scene on New Years day after a frost over night to start bringing the river back within its banks yet again. We have been having spate after spate recently with all the unpredictable weather which will not have done the spawning much good especially on the main stem of our mighty river.

Over the last few weeks we have endured 3 spates over 13 foot due to very changeable weather.

This was one of the recent spates, hopefully the salmon would have seen this coming and held off their spawning activities until the river subsides back to a reasonable level.

The count down now starts to the Tay opening in exactly 2 weeks time on the 15th January 2013. We need more colder weather and dare I say it snow to give us good conditions for the Salmon fishing opening. More details on the Tay opening will be posted in the next few days.
