Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Report for last few days of 2009.
Tay ReportsReport for the last 4 days to the 15th October 2009.The last 4 days of the 2009 season reported 208 Salmon and 5 Sea Trout which was reasonable catch for the season so far despite the tough year on the Tay. The weather was settled with a high pressure giving us perfect river conditions.
There were other fish being caught and not reported. There was a spread of Salmon throughout the district as all the beats were catching but not in the usual numbers for the time of year.
Quite a few good fish were caught this past week yet again which is quite heartening. Best salmon of the week was a magnificent 28lbs salmon off the Upper Murthly beat caught from the boat by Robin Melville and carefully returned. Robin Melville had a memorable last few days on the 2009 Tay season catching a 28, 25 and a 20lbs salmon all of which were returned. Mike Smith on the Burnmouth beat at Stanley had a 25lbs salmon as well from the boat which was returned. Despite the poorer runs this year the Tay can still produce the really big salmon.
Several beats recorded good individual catches for the last 4 days. These included 26 from Waulkmill, 27 from Stobhall, 19 from Taymount, 15 from Ballathie and 15 from Cargill.
Many thanks to all who have sent me their individual experiences over the season.
The river temperature has now dropped to around 50 degrees Fahrenheit or 10 degrees Celsius.
There is no doubt the river has had a very hard season and a number of anglers have responded by returning the majority of the salmon they caught. The Tay would like to thank you for that which will hopefully show benefits for the future.

Sarah Bird with a perfect 20lb hen salmon which took a black flying C at 'The Boil' on Newtyle. The fish was returned.

Brian Archer from Somerset caught this 25lb salmon on a copper Toby at Meikelour. It was returned safely.
