Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Salmon Fishing Report for the Week ending 4th August 2012.

Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Salmon Fishing Report for the Week ending 4th August 2012.

The catches were reasonable last week despite unsettled conditions and everyone had to work hard to gain this. The weather has now improved thankfully and we need that to remain to maintain good sport this week as grilse and top quality summer salmon continuing to run the river. The quality of salmon remained high with fish up to 25 pounds in weight, this was again encouraging and hopefully will continue with good prospects for the coming week.

Conditions were difficult throughout the week and everyone had to work hard for success. River levels fluctuated during the week from unsettled weather with low pressure dominating but this has now settled back nicely. The water levels remain just above summer level encouraging salmon to run the river and a strengthening of the run is expected to improve catches further. The river will be settled for the start of the coming week and the fresh water should continue to spice things up for some good sport. The quality was again exceptional with lots of sea liced fish caught and more multi sea winter salmon landed. Salmon continue to be caught from top to bottom in the river with others caught and not registered meaning fish are running through rapidly and progressing upstream which encourages everyone.

There were 187 salmon and 5 sea trout reported with the largest salmon an impressive 25 pounds on the Upper Scone beat at Benchil just below Stanley. Salmon were landed throughout the system from the Lower River to the Upper River.

Beat catches reported (week ending 4th August)
SALMON & GRILSE: Almondmouth 40, Waulkmill 2, Lower Redgorton 7, Luncarty 4, Upper Redgorton 1, Fishponds 6, Benchil and Pitlochrie 3, Upper Scone 3, Catholes 3, Stobhall 7, Taymount 4, Ballathie 10, Cargill 11, Islamouth 4, Lower and Upper Islamouth 13, Upper Islamouth and Meikleour House 4, Meikleour House 3, Kercock 4, Murthly 2 15, Newtyle 4, Dunkeld House 4, Dalmarnock 1, Dalguise 2, Lower Kinnaird 12, Upper Kinnaird 5, Edradynate 2, Farleyer Upper 8, Farleyer Lower 3, Keithick Mains 2.
Total: 187 Largest: Upper Scone 25lbs
SEA TROUT: Fishponds 1, Stobhall 1, Taymount 1, Murthly 2 3, Dunkeld House 1.
Total: 7 Largest: Stobhall & Taymount & Dunkeld House 3lbs

On the Lower River 125 salmon were landed. Despite a reasonable total salmon were hard to come by on the lower river with the exception of Almondmouth where 40 fish were landed throughout the week. At the start of the week sediment was coming from the Isla from very heavy rain then in the middle of the week heavy rain brought the river up and left a peaty stain. This is now clearing and we should see better catches this coming week. All the beats reported success but with a great deal of effort. On Upper Scone Gary Perks enjoyed success landing his largest salmon caught fly fishing in the Lundy stream weighing an estimated 25 pounds. Further success on the beat included Belgian visitor Gaetan de Brouwer with a 12 pounds summer salmon again on the fly.
Also on Benchil Alan Davidson caught a lovely fresh salmon fly fishing from the boat on Satuday on the Benchil/Pitlochrie fishing’s.
At Cargill Angus Johnstones party enjoyed success despite difficult conditions and later in the week Jason Whiteford landed an 18 pounds salmon from the famous Pot Shot. Islamouth had a reasonable week. There is a real feeling if the weather settles down and the river runs at a consistent height the sport will be tremendous, as there seems to be a good run on and this will strengthen over the next few weeks.

The Middle River registered 28. On Kercock Ian Paterson had a grilse on the fly as did Jeff Biggam and he also caught the biggest for the week at 11 pounds. Murthly 2 had a great day on Monday landing 8.
At Newtyle Peter Dobson caught a lovely 14 pounds salmon from the Boil fly fishing and first ever fly caught salmon were caught by Mike McDermott and George Ewings who both landed fresh grilse. Experiences they will never forget, well done both of you. Dunkeld House caught on most days. Sandra Pollock was amongst the successful anglers on Dalmarnock.

The Upper River produced 32. The upper river continues to produce fish as the river levels remain well up for the time of year and allow salmon to progress upstream. Upper and Lower Kinnaird continue their good season landing several salmon throughout the week.
Amongst the successful anglers were Scott Lines landing his second ever salmon on the fly from the upper beat, Michael Austen had success in the Rock pool and American visitor John MacMillan landed 2 salmon up to 8 pounds. Farleyer and Edradynate also caught to keep their season going at a great pace.

The Isla registered 2 salmon all from Keithick Mains.

The Earn registered 1 from Upper Aberuthven.

The Tay Conservation Dinner will be held at the Dunkeld Hilton Hotel on Saturday 20th October 2012.

Celebrate a Tay spring salmon with a Dalmore Tay Dram and contribute to the future of this mighty river. Dalmore distillery have created a unique expression of their single malt whisky and a generous donation from each bottle sold will be gifted to the Tay Foundation to support their work to protect and improve the river.

Many thanks for all the pictures everyone is sending of salmon and thanks to all who have sent me their individual fishing experiences on the river. I would be most grateful if you would continue to do the same by emailing robert.salmonfishing@googlemail.com to be included in this report.

Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Salmon Fishing Prospects for week commencing 6th August 2012.

Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Salmon Fishing Prospects for week commencing 6th August 2012.

The river was unsettled for most of last week but looks much better now for the start of this coming week. The catches were hard earned but reasonable overall. The salmon and grilse to run will be strengthening as we get into August and this should give the river a great chance of producing more good sport. If the weather remains settled the river will see it’s true potential.

The Tay in Perthshire, Scotland currently offers outstanding salmon fishing with good availability. See what is possible by watching this video.

The weather is to be reasonably settled this week with the chance of thundery rain at the start then settling down which hopefully will not unsettle the river and this should give excellent prospects of sport on the river. There might be a chance of a fresh fish anywhere in the river and hopefully the run will strengthen after fresh water to give us even more success. Grilse are now more evident in the system and Multi sea winter salmon continue to be caught, which is very encouraging. The prospect of a large salmon is a real possibility with big fish continuing to be caught over the last few weeks.
Fly fishing in Horsey at Stanley.

As to methods, in settled conditions and warmer river temperatures fishing by any method will be varied to catch the elusive Tay salmon. Fly fishing with a floating line and a sink tip is recommended with smaller tubes or a dressed fly. It is always worth a go with a Sun Ray as well. Spinning from the bank with Devons and Tobies are a good bet. It is even worth a go with a flying C or an upstream Toby as the fish become more active in warmer water.

Finally you are reminded that the Tay's catch and release policy for 2012.
From 1 June to end of Season:
• All hen fish of any size and all cock fish over 10 pounds should be released.
• All coloured and gravid fish to be released.
• No more than one clean fish weighing, where possible, less than 10 pounds should be retained per angler per day.
• Anglers should not use worms in September or October in any part of the district.
Worming in June, July and August
Please adhere to these recommendations and help preserve the long term future of the river and your sport.

To help you follow our guidelines I have included these helpful pointers

How to SAFELY Release a Salmon
“The best method of releasing a salmon is to leave it in the water
and touch nothing but the hook with fingers or pliers. When taking a picture, lift the fish from the water with wet hands, quickly take the picture and return it immediately back to the water.
“Whatever the method, care combined with speed, will give the fish the best chance of survival.”

Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Salmon Fishing Prospects for week commencing 30th July 2012.

The river was settled last week and has dropped back to a good level. The catches improved with good conditions and we saw the best return of the year so far. The fresher water should encourage more salmon and grilse to run and should give the river a great chance of producing more good sport. If the weather remains settled the river will see it’s true potential.
