Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Salmon Fishing Report for the Week ending 6th October 2012.

Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Salmon Fishing Report for the Week ending 6th October 2012.

The catches were good last week but hard earned again after more fluctuating water levels from heavy rain in the west early in the week and yet more annoying Hydro rises at the end of the week,
A nice little surprise on Saturday from the Tummel!
we are now looking for an improvement in catches as October arrives with an expected late run. The good news is that the weather is to remain settled this week with some rain on Thursday giving us excellent prospects so we can maintain good sport as grilse and top quality salmon continue to run the river. The quality of salmon remained high with fish up to 26 pounds in weight, this was again encouraging and hopefully will continue.

Conditions were reasonable after a rise in levels from rain early in the week but everyone had to work hard for success. River levels fluctuated from a few hydro rises
This one was from the Lyon!
however excellent catches followed especially in the lower reaches. The water levels continue just summer level encouraging salmon to run the river and a strengthening of the run is expected to improve catches further. The water temperature has started to fall, which is expected at this time of year but not dramatically. Currently it is around 50 degrees Fahrenheit or 10 Celsius. The river will be settled for the start of the week with more glorious autumn sunshine forecast and assuming the river remains settled this should give excellent prospects for sport. The quality was again exceptional with sea liced fish caught and more multi sea winter salmon landed. Salmon continue to be caught from top to bottom in the river with others caught and not registered meaning fish are running through rapidly and progressing upstream which encourages everyone.

The late autumn sunshine is giving us some spectacular scenery as the leaves turn on the trees so do not forget your cameras for those photo opportunities and not forgetting that memorable Tay salmon.
View from Stanley down to Benchil.

There were 352 salmon reported which was another good week for the river. Large salmon continue to be caught week on week and this week was no exception with several salmon weighing close to 30 pounds. The largest fish of the week was 26 pounds from Dalguise. Salmon were landed throughout the system from the Lower River to the Upper River.

(week ending 6th October)

Total: 352 Largest: Dalguise 26lbs
SEA TROUT: Waulkmill 5, Lower Redgorton 2, Luncarty 1, Benchil and Pitlochrie 1, Upper Aberuthven 1, Lower Aberuthven 10.
Total: 20 Largest: Waulkmill 4lbs

On the Lower River 291 salmon were landed. All the lower beats are having reasonable success but they are having to work extremely hard using all sorts of methods to gain catches and are now looking for a strengthening of the autumn run to improve catches. The very lower part of the river including Almondmouth up to Luncarty are enjoying great sport as low water has held salmon up in the beats resulting in excellent catches for the week. Further up river catches are harder to achieve but still good results were earned with effort. Almondmouth had a good week registering 43. The Stormont Angling club members are also picking up a few good clean fish on the fly and that can be a barometer for the river. Lower Redgorton continued where they left off last week with some good double figure days and fish up to 25 pounds. Waulkmill and
Fishponds also had productive weeks with some good days. Bill and Sandra Robbins had a reasonable week on Upper Redgorton working extremely hard for their successes. At Stanley Peter Fosters party enjoyed a good week landing 13 salmon with Oliver Beham catching the largest fish of the week weighing 23 pounds. Stobhall and Taymount had reasonable weeks with a highlight of 14 for Taymount on Saturday when all around them were finding it extremely difficult after yet another hydro rise from the Tummel. Ballathie and Cargill had good weeks picking up fish on most days.

The Middle River registered 36. This was a much better week with all the beats reporting success. Kercock had 13 fish for the week. The largest 18 pounds, was caught by Chris Palmer who also had one at 10 pounds. Some of the other anglers who got fish were; Roy McKeracker 3, the largest 16lbs. Dougie Mclean got 3, Stuart Mensley had 1 and Jim Lamb got 2. The Murthly beats continue to produce fish on a regular basis.
At Newtyle Damian Gunn landed an 18 pounds cock salmon fly fishing in the Boil which was the largest fish from the beat last week. Dunkeld House has also been producing on most days.

The Upper River produced 19. Dalguise had a good week and had a highlight of a 26 pounds fish on Saturday. The Farleyer beats continue to have success landing several more fish this past week.

The Isla registered 2 from Keithick Mains.

The Earn registered 4 from the Aberuthven beats.

Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Salmon Fishing Prospects for week commencing 8th October 2012.

Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Salmon Fishing Prospects for week commencing 8th October 2012.

The river is settled after a good week despite some fluctuating river levels due heavy rain in the west earlier in the week and yet more hydro rises making life extremely difficult at times when expectation was high and catches remained hard earned. Despite these difficulties catches remained at a good level making it an excellent week by and large on most beats. The lower beats above the tide continued to do well as the catches reflected. Prospects for this coming week are excellent with a settled weather forecast with some rain maybe by Thursday. The salmon run is steady but hopefully will improve, hopefully we will see a good autumn run over the coming weeks, we are now going into October and this should give the river a great chance of producing more good sport if we get settled conditions.
Late autumn sunshine at Stanley.

The weather is settled currently with high pressure giving us all some late autumn sunshine and some glorious autumnal sights on the river but some rain is forecast for Thursday, which may give us a bit more water and excellent prospects for sport on the river. Let us also hope the hydro stop sending rises down the river on a daily basis making life even more difficult than it all ready is. There might be a chance of a fresh fish anywhere in the river and hopefully the run will strengthen as we go into the autumn to give us even more success. Grilse and Multi sea winter salmon continue to be caught, which is very encouraging and with the settled conditions it should be a good week for the river. The prospect of a large salmon is a real possibility with big fish continuing to be caught every week.
The sun sets on the river looking from Benchil to Upper Redgorton.

As to methods, in settled conditions and river temperatures cooling fishing by any method will be varied to catch the elusive Tay salmon. Currently the river temperature is around 50 degrees Fahrenheit or 11 Celsius. Fly fishing with a floating line and a sink tip is recommended with smaller tubes or a dressed fly. It is now worth a go with a sunk line and smallish tubes with resident fish now in the pools and varied tactics can produce results. It is always worth a go with a Sun Ray as well. Spinning from the bank with Devons and Tobies are a good bet. An all red devon is a good bet at this time of year.

Finally you are reminded that the Tay's catch and release policy for 2012.
From 1 June to end of Season:
• All hen fish of any size and all cock fish over 10 pounds should be released.
• All coloured and gravid fish to be released.
• No more than one clean fish weighing, where possible, less than 10 pounds should be retained per angler per day.
• Anglers should not use worms in September or October in any part of the district.

Please adhere to these recommendations and help preserve the long term future of the river and your sport.

To help you follow our guidelines I have included these helpful pointers

How to SAFELY Release a Salmon
A salmon prior to release at Stanley.

“The best method of releasing a salmon is to leave it in the water
and touch nothing but the hook with fingers or pliers. When taking a picture, lift the fish from the water with wet hands, quickly take the picture and return it immediately back to the water.
“Whatever the method, care combined with speed, will give the fish the best chance of survival.”

A fish being carefully unhooked in the net and in the river.

Currently salmon are taking longer to recover so please give them time before releasing. Releasing fish from boats in the river is not recommended. Keep the fish in the water as much as possible and reduce handling to give them every chance to recover prior to release.

If you have any news or pictures of catches or experiences on the Tay and you would like to share them please email me on robert.salmonfishing@googlemail.com to be included in this report.
