Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Salmon Fishing Review May 2012.

Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Salmon Fishing Review May 2012.

May was a good month on the river in 2012 with nearly 500 salmon registered on Fishtay and the appearance of some large multi sea winter salmon. Weather wise the month started off fine with the river falling away then in the middle of the month the river rose dramatically after torrential rain encouraging salmon to run the river. The river then dropped steadily towards the end of the month giving settled conditions and good catches. Isalmouth dominated the returns catching 95 salmon during the month.

Islamouth on the Tay.

On the Lower River the first week produced 29 fish and a superb 32 pounds caught on the Ballathie beat by 12 years old James Meakin. Islamouth started the month off landing 16 salmon all caught fly fishing. Perth angler Neil Tong landed 4 in a day up to 17 pounds from bank and boat. Ian Mitchell caught a 21 pounds salmon from the tail of the Long Head. Week 2 saw 39 salmon landed. On Benchil local angler George McKinlay caught a lovely sea liced 15 pounds salmon on a Toby. Taymount and Stobhall caught salmon with Mark Scruton landing a cracking 25 pounds salmon fly fishing from the boat on Stobhall at Tams Corner and Sandra Robbins was successful on Ladies day at Taymount catching a 15 pounds fish again on the fly and at Tams corner.
32 pounds cracker from Ballathie earlier in the month.
Islamouth continued to be very productive landing 22 salmon for the week, which included 7 in a day. Week 3 was a poor week for the lower river with 19 due to the continued unsettled water levels. Local angler George McKinlay caught a couple of salmon on Benchil including a 17 pounds beauty. Cargill and Ballathie continue to work away quietly and produce large salmon. Ballathie landed a superb 24 pounds fish on Friday. Islamouth again caught throughout the week. Good weather arrived for the last week and catches improved with 43 registered and over half the total came from Islamouth. The beat had a great end to the month with 11 in one day for John McElroys party on the 31st.

The Middle River had 21 in week one with Kercock having a good week with several salmon landed on fly and spinner. Successful anglers included David Crosbie and Norman Wood landing 2 salmon in 2 days up to 12 pounds on the fly and Dougie McLean and Dennis Robb catching fresh salmon. Jim McEwan also had a 7 pounds fish on a Salmo. At Newtyle the Bowmans were successful and the Dunkeld House beat had a better week with Simon Furniss catching 3 himself. Week 2 was better with 34 fish. On Kercock Jim Lamb and Jim McEwan landed salmon up to 16 pounds. The Murthly 2 beat fishing Stenton and the Upper beat had its best week of the season with 13 salmon caught mostly fly fishing. At Newtyle there was a first Tay spring salmon for Norrie McLeod fly fishing in the Trap. Not content with that he promptly caught another from the same place on a deadly Golden Willie Gunn. Dave Cargill was also successful landing a 16 pounds beauty on a Salmo. Dunkeld House had a reasonable week with Bill Robbins landing a 17 pounds beauty on the fly and American visitor Mark Guidry landing a colourful fish on a Salmo.
Further upstream at Dalmarnock it was a red letter day for Dr Sandip Datta and his new wife Sam on Friday. Sam was fishing the Clacken Taggart pool in the morning. She landed a beautiful 26 pounds spring Salmon that was expertly netted by ghillie Colin Mcfadden. It was her biggest salmon to date, a fish of a lifetime. The fish was carefully released to continue its journey. Sandip then caught a 7 pounds springer, and Sam had great satisfaction in telling him it was a tiddler! 16 came from the third week with Chris Metzner from Australia catching his first ever salmon fly fishing in the Cathederal Stream and Brian Joseph catching an 11 pounds salmon on a Toby Salmo in the Ferry Pool on Dunkeld House. On Newtyle John Gunn was successful harling landing a 15 pounds salmon in the Ferry pool. Regular Allan Rennie, caught a cracking sea liced 9 pounds fish fly fishing the Deans Burn and later in the week the Flying C was the favoured bait of David Bryce landing a 15 pounds beauty from the Trap. Only 10 came from the middle beats on week 4 due to clear skies. At Kercock Kenny Milne caught an 11 pounds fresh fish and David Hudson caught his first Tay spring salmon weighing 15 pounds. At Newtyle John Coupland landed 2 spring salmon in under half an hour up to 10 pounds. Further upstream Jim Ferrie and Peter Sproston were successful at Dunkeld House Hotel. Peter landed 2 throughout the week; an 8 pounds fish from the Lady’s pool and a cracking 8 pounds fish from the Cathedral stream fly fishing from the boat.

The Upper River started a good month with 28. Despite low water fish were caught in reasonable numbers and there was over 300 salmon through the fish ladder at Pitlochry. On Loch Faskally Shaun Camburn landed a 24 pounds salmon trolling a pink Kynoch, which brought their tally up to 8 for the season. Below the Dam the Portnacraig beat landed salmon up to 20 pounds on fly and spinner. Successful anglers included Gordon Hanslip, Davie Stewart, Stephane Bovy and visiting father and son Tony and Anthony Churchill. Dalguise, Kinnaird, Farleyer and Findynate also caught with a notable 25 pounds fish coming from Lower Kinnaird. The second week was again productive with 24. Dalguise had a salmon of 23 pounds with 2 others caught in the same day. Kinnaird were again successful and Raymond Doonan caught a cracking 10 pounds spring salmon fly fishing on the Upper Farleyer beat earlier in the week. 500 fish were now through the ladder. At Portnacaig Dean McGowan landed 2 salmon up to 13 pounds and other successful anglers included Neil MacLellan, Gordon Nichol and Patrick Hammond. The Pitlochry Club had the lower Tummel as well and Alistair Stephen landed a 10 pounds fish on the Greenbank fly fishing. The third week was superb producing 42 due to increasing water levels after rain. Dalguise had an excellent week with a high point when John Cameron caught 4 salmon to his own rod on the fly up to 19 pounds from the Otterstone Pool. Further upstream Eddie Higgins caught his first spring salmon on Upper Farleyer with John McCallum. On the Tummel the extra water made it a week to remember at Portnacraig for the Pitlochry Angling Club. 11 salmon were landed in one day up to 16 pounds on fly and spinner. The successful rods included Matthew Currie, Mark Currie, Rory MacNab, Steve Watt and Gordon Nichol. Catch of the club season so far fell to Blackpool fisherman Gary Westhead landing 6 salmon to his own rod fly fishing from both banks up to 17 pounds. He will remember that day for a time. There was 26 salmon landed for the club for the week with the vast majority fresh run salmon. Week 4 saw 23 from this area. Upper Farleyer continued to have success. At Lower Kinnaird
Mark Sabin had a lovely 8 pounds sea liced fish fly fishing the Junction pool. The beat finished with 5 salmon for the week up to 20 pounds in weight. It was a quieter week at Pitlochry as salmon stream through the dam with the counter at over 1000 with the warmer conditions. Marc Wriggleworth landed 2 salmon on the fly and Gordon Hanslip, Anthony Rusher, Davy Stewart and Steven Watt reported other successes. Jimmy Ross also opened his account with a 10 pounds salmon on the fly.

Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Salmon Fishing Review April 2012.

Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Salmon Fishing Review April 2012.

April saw temperatures come back to normal after the extremely warm end to March and the river dropped to summer levels until the last 10 days of the month. The very lower part of the river below Stanley found it hard going after the water temperature increased dramatically in March but salmon continued to be caught from Stanley upwards and Islamouth started to come into their own continually being the best beat week on week. April finished up with 310 for the month.

On the Lower River the first week saw 33 fish reported. Peter Gifford landed a lovely fresh 12 pounds springer fly fishing on the Catholes in the Black Stones casting from the boat. Stobhall and Taymount produced excellent spring sport on fly and spinner landing salmon up to 20 pounds. Cargill had success with Claire Wylie landing a lovely 11 pounds salmon.

Islamouth started the month with locals Jim Ferrie, Simon Furniss and Sandra Robins landing good fish fly fishing from boat and bank. The second week produced 36. 17 spring salmon were landed on Islamouth up to 20 pounds and were all caught on fly. The Gifford party landed 4 fish for a memorable spring day. At the end of the week the Morritt party had good sport with Paul Dolman, Nigel Ryley and Jamie Bennett enjoying success. The third week saw more unsettled weather and a bit more water. 23 were caught in the third week with Stobhall and Taymount continuing their good spring catching salmon up to 18 pounds.
Jamie Bennett with a 16 pounds springer from the Long Head on Islamouth.

Islamouth again proved the place to be with consistent catches throughout the week. Patrick Gordon's party did well at the end of the week under very difficult conditions and landed 6 salmon fly fishing. Amongst the successful anglers Chris Hume landed an 11 pounds salmon from the Castle pool and John Rich caught 2 salmon weighing 8 and 14 pounds. The last week saw 26 fish landed and again Islamouth proved the place to be with consistent catches. 19 salmon were landed on the beat with John McElroys party catching 11 in the last 3 days with several being lost as well.

The Middle River caught 17 in the first week with Murthly 2 landing a 21 pounds salmon. At Kercock David Bryce landed a 7 pounds springer. Adam Joseph had a lovely springer from the Gauge pool on a Salmo at Dunkeld House fishing’s and Newtyle and Dalmarnock also had success. The second week saw 17 with the Murthly area doing well. At Newtyle Stephen Roberts, Peter Dobson and Nik Hope had good sport landing springers up to 17 pounds. The third week produced 17. At Kercock David Makin caught a 7 pounds salmon and Kenny Milne had a lovely 16 pounds salmon.
Berwyn Morris landed his first spring salmon from Newtyle weighing 15 pounds from the Steps pool. Further up river at Dunkeld Iain Howie caught a 13 pounds spring salmon on a fly out of the Cutty. The last week produced 26.
Ron Dadswell had his first ever trip to the Tay and landed this beauty on the fly at Stenton with Tony Black.

Murthly 2 had a good week catching 10 from Stenton and the Upper beat just below Newtyle. At Kercock Steve Banks had an 8 pounds salmon and Bob Burns had a nice 15 pounds fish on a copper Toby. It was a very frustrating week for Kercock as 8 other salmon were hooked and lost mostly on the fly. Most of the beats were encountering similar statistics due to unsettled conditions. Newtyle had a better week with James Bowman, Neill Scrimgeour, Allen Rennie, Jess Miller, David and Andy Morris all landing good salmon by various means. The biggest fish was landed by Newtyle regular Allen Rennie fly fishing St Marys stream weighing 17 pounds. Further upstream at Dunkeld House salmon were landed throughout the week with Willie Cummins catching a 16 pounds springer on a Rapala in the Lady pool.

The Upper River landed 10 on the first week from Dalguise, Kinnaird, Farleyer, Edradynate and Portnacraig on the Tummel. John Cameron caught a lovely 20 pounds Salmon in The Guay Pool on Dalguise fly fishing with a Cascade tube fly. At Kinnaird Greg Stephens landed his first ever salmon from the Guay pool weighing 14 pounds and Hugh Coulson landed an impressive 18 pounds beauty in the Junction pool. Portnacraig continued to be productive with Billy Davidson catching 3 spring salmon on the fly. Other successful anglers included Gordon Hyslop with a lovely 16 pounds springer on a Monkey and Clint Doig with an estimated 19 pounds beauty on a Posh Tosh. The second week accounted for 16 salmon as fish ran through the system. Brian Joseph was again successful at the Dam along with Robert McKenzie who landed a 16 pounds fresh salmon on a self-tied tube. Salmon have also been landed on the lower Tummel with Alistair Stephen catching an estimated 18 pounds salmon. Salmon were now running the dam at Pitlochry with over 100 through the counter. Only 10 were registered on week 3 with the Tummel is producing consistently. Fish up to 20 pounds were landed at the Portnacraig beat below Pitlochry Dam. Successful anglers included Roy Maddox, Rab Brown and David Bryce. On Lower Kinnaird a delighted Alex Ramsay caught his first ever River Tay salmon weighing 11 pounds in the Guay pool. The last week saw 21 registered as Salmon continued to bolt up the Tay to the upper areas with over 200 salmon now through the Salmon ladder at Pitlochry and the first salmon caught on Loch Faskally. The Pitlochry Angling Club Portnacraig beat continued to produce salmon but could do with a bit more water. The locals were showing their experience with Andy Walker, Davy Stewart and Gordon Hanslip all catching good salmon. John Richmond also caught a cracking 18 pounds salmon. There will be several other salmon coming from the Tummel but not reported. Back on the Tay Farleyer, Findynate and the Kinnaird beats continued to feature.
A beauty form Lower Kinnaird.

Salmon Fishing Scotland Predator control on Rivers.

Salmon Fishing Scotland Predator control on Rivers.

This was a recent angling article in the Daily Record BY SILVER WILKIE.

During a walk down the river the other day I thought I saw a salmon heading and tailing.

It’s been a poor back end and I’ve sometimes gone half a day without seeing a fish, so this was an event.

Seconds later I realised my mistake. From the depths out popped a goosander. Then I saw another one, and another one. There was a family of six eagerly feeding.

And what were they gobbling up? I’ll give you four answers – salmon, sea trout, brown trout and grayling parr.

Nowadays, because the goosander – a saw-billed duck – is a protected species there are hundreds upon hundreds of them hunting on every Salmon River in the country?

Goosander facts
Male

These handsome diving ducks are a member of the sawbill family, so called because of their long, serrated bills, used for catching fish. A largely freshwater bird, the goosander first bred in the UK in 1871. It built up numbers in Scotland and then since 1970 it has spread across northern England into Wales, reaching south-west England. Its love of salmon and trout has brought it into conflict with fishermen. It is gregarious, forming into flocks of several thousand in some parts of Europe.

Upland rivers of N England, Scotland and Wales in summer. In winter they move to lakes, gravel pits and reservoirs, occasionally to sheltered estuaries.

Female

Just imagine the huge amount of juvenile fish they are gobbling up!

The same is true of cormorants. I remember the days decades ago when it was a rarity to see one in freshwater. Nowadays I’ve spotted as many as 40 to 50 in one flock heading upriver to their killing grounds like German Dornier bombers over London, Coventry and Clydebank.

Just imagine, too, the damage they are doing to stocks of immature fish.

It’s no wonder ghillies, fishery managers, and anglers who are increasingly practicing catch and release, are fuming that the licenses given to cull the numbers of these predators are so paltry it’s hardly worth doing.

Birds such as cormorants and goosanders are protected by law and the power of the influential Royal Society for the Protection of Birds.

Like many other anglers I applaud their efforts to look after our song birds and endangered species such as ospreys and sea eagles.

Cormorant Facts

A large and conspicuous waterbird, the cormorant has an almost primitive appearance with its long neck making it appear almost reptilian. It is often seen standing with its wings held out to dry. Regarded by some as black, sinister and greedy, cormorants are supreme fishers which can bring them into conflict with anglers and they have been persecuted in the past. The UK holds internationally important wintering numbers.

Found around the UK coastline on rocky shores, coastal lagoons and estuaries, it is increasingly being seen inland at reservoirs, lakes, gravel pits and rivers.

But cormorants and goosanders are not exactly endangered.

Salmon are fast becoming so, but unfortunately they are cold blooded creatures which do not stir up the warm hearts of bird lovers.

I just wish there was a Royal Society for the Protection of Salmon.

What we are also seeing on our rivers is an increasing encroachment of seals upstream into fresh water where they chase and eat salmon.

On one beat of the lower Tay that I fish, seals cleared out what is normally a huge stock of salmon waiting to spawn by eating them and chasing them upriver.

I recently saw an aerial photograph of scores and scores of seals on a sandbank in the Tay estuary. Goodness knows how many salmon a day it takes to fuel their massive bulks, but it must be an awful lot.
A group of 500 to 600 seals in the Tay estuary recently.

Now I’m not advocating a total wipeout of seals, cormorants and goosanders, just sensible culls to establish a sensible balance of nature as there was in the past.

Salmon Fishing Scotland Tay Salmon Fishing Review March 2012.

Salmon Fishing Scotland Tay Salmon Fishing Review March 2012.

March saw summer arrive! Yes temperatures rose as the month went on and day time temperatures of over 20 C were experienced in the last week and the river temperature reached 51 F or 10.5 C which was unheard of. This dramatically affected sport below Stanley on the lower river but from there upwards catches were steady. The total for the month was 280 which was 20 up on 2011.

On the Lower River 30 salmon were registered on the first week. Islamouth consistently caught during the week as spring salmon hesitated at the mouth of the Isla. They had a notable day landing 5 fresh salmon. Iain Wilkie and Davis Orr were amongst the successful anglers. Stobhall and Taymount had success as well landing fish up to 17 pounds. On Stobhall the Blundell and Watters parties enjoyed their spring fishing trip to the area and on Taymount the Ladies were lucky with Angela Summerville and Sandra Robbins catching spring beauties. Ballathie and Cargill are starting to produce on a regular basis. Scott Crawford caught a 16 pounds springer fly fishing the Manse Bay on Cargill and the Mitchell party had a cracking 20 pounds salmon off Ballathie. The second week saw Malcolm Green landing the largest spring salmon of the week from Taymount weighing 24 pounds. Stobhall were consistent throughout the week landing 6 salmon up to 17 pounds with the fly proving popular. Islamouth had another good week landing salmon every day. The third week was even better with 51. Danny Fulton caught a superb salmon on Taymount estimated at 28 pounds fly fishing from the bank at the Sharks Fin. The fish measured 42 inches and another big beauty came from Cargill weighing 24.5 pounds landed by Malcolm Craven. On Upper Redgorton Greggor Nimmo caught an 18 pounds springer on a Rapala from the boat under the guidance of ghillie Mike Hay. Two 12 pounds spring salmon were caught fly fishing on Benchil by Jim Ferrie and Rob Fairclough.
Barry Ward with a sea liced 17 pounds beauty from Stobhall.
Stobhall and Taymount had good weeks again landing several salmon. Successful anglers on Stobhall included Pete Murray and Setterfield and on Taymount John Hutcheon, David Budd, and Ian Kettles all had springers to remember. Cargill and Ballathie worked away as well with Tim Greenfields party landing 4 fish. Islamouth continued a good month landing several with Tom Borthwick amongst the successful anglers landing a 13 pounds beauty on a harled Rapala. The last week saw Finnish party successfully fly fishing on the Lower Scone beats at Waulkmill and Goldcastle under the watchful eye of Ian Kirk.

John Jennings was also successful on the river below Stanley landing an 8 pounds spring salmon on the Benchil beat fly fishing. Stobhall, Taymount, Cargill and Ballathie all caught but not in any quantity disappointingly this past week. Islamouth again proved the hot spot as salmon hesitated at the mouth of the Isla.

The Middle River landed 11 on the first week and produced fish with the milder conditions as salmon bolted through the lower areas and had a rest there. Glendelvine continued their good start with John Hastie landing his first ever salmon weighing 9 pounds from the boat. Newtyle at Dunkeld had a good week landing 6 spring salmon up to 15 pounds. On the second week John Mitchell caught a lovely 16 pounds spring salmon fly fishing in the Cotter on Newtyle.
Gordon Stewart was amongst the successful anglers on Kercock with a cracking 16 pounds salmon. The third week saw 13 caught with Stephen Roberts landing a 16 pounds fish fly fishing on Newtyle. 7 were caught in the last week.

The Upper River produced 6 on the first week with spring salmon coming from Kinnaird, Farleyer and consistently from Portnacraig on the Tummel. Bankfoot angler Billy Davidson had 2 off the Dam fly fishing up to an impressive 20 pounds on a self tied tube named a Horsey Dog. In the second week spring salmon came from Farleyer, Edradynate and Dalguise. Malcolm Bennett caught a memorable 18 pounds springer fly fishing the Bridge pool at Dalguise with a Conehead Flame Thrower. The Portnacraig beat at Pitlochry Dam continued to produce fish. The third week produced 16 fish with spring salmon coming from Kinnaird, Farleyer and the Tummel.
An early spring salmon from Farleyer caught fly fishing by Alum Williams.
Local anglers Steven Watt and Alum Williams caught spring salmon fly fishing on Farleyer earlier in the week. The Portnacraig beat at Pitlochry was producing on a daily basis with spring salmon running right up the system. Successful anglers included Kenny Horn, George Renwick, Brian Joseph and Gordon Nichol landing fish up to 20 pounds and mostly fly fishing. The last week produced 23 and that was good for the time of year and proved salmon were running hard to the upper reaches. The Kinnaird and Farleyer beats were having a great time landing spring salmon on a regular basis. Both beats had 7 between them on Monday and worked away quietly for the rest of the week.
12 year old Robbie Fairfull with Jock Monteith after catching his first ever salmon on his first days fly fishing weighing 19 pounds.
Kinnaird had 14 for March, which was excellent considering their average for the month is only 1.2! Early in the week the Pang party were successful on Lower Kinnaird. The Portnacraig beat for Pitlochry Angling Club continued to produce spring salmon. Billy Davidson from Bankfoot had a day to remember landing 3 Spring salmon before lunch fly fishing from the town bank. Other catchers included Neil MacLellen, David Harris and local Davie Stewart landing salmon up to 19 pounds.

Salmon Fishing Scotland Tay Salmon Fishing Review February 2012.

Salmon Fishing Scotland Tay Salmon Fishing Review February 2012.

February started off cold with river temperatures below 40 but by the end of the month was rising alarmingly especially for the lower river. This meant the catches started to spread out as far up as the Upper river.

Action from the Pitlochrie beat at Stanley on a cold February day.
18 salmon were reported in the first week with the best salmon of 18 pounds being landed on the Murthly beat. Spring salmon were landed throughout the system from the Lower river to the Upper river including the first spring salmon from the Portnacraig beat at Pitlochry caught by Adam Joseph fly fishing and weighing 13 ½ pounds.
A superb spring salmon caught at Pitlochry by Steve Watt.
Also salmon were reported from Edradynate, Upper Farleyer and Dalguise from the Upper area. 20 salmon were reported on the second week with the best salmon of 18 pounds being landed on the Lower Kinnaird beat.
A beauty from Glendelvine.
Newtyle continued to have early success as the spring salmon ran through the river. The catches remained quite slow in third week with 21 salmon reported but the quality of spring salmon remained high with salmon caught up to 17 pounds in weight. The river temperature rose to around 44F or 6C due to milder weather and this encouraged salmon to run and spread the catches. The rise in temperature did not help the lower river below Stanley, but Salmon continued to be caught in the middle and Upper River. Catholes just above Stanley had a fine start to the season landing 11 by the end of the month and Islamouth started to catch consistently which was to improve into a phenomenal spring season.
A cracker from Islamouth caught by John McElroy.
Murthly and Glendelvine were also working away while salmon were being caught up as far as Pitlochrie dam. The month finished with 97 fish recorded.
The sun goes down on a cold February day.

Salmon Fishing Scotland Tay Salmon Fishing Review January 2012.

Salmon Fishing Scotland Tay Salmon Fishing Review January 2012.

Opening Week.

Good conditions prevailed for the opening week, which resulted in success for beats throughout the river as well as some higher beats. The river temperature of around 40F or 4C meant salmon could be expected anywhere in the system rather than only on the lower river as in the past couple of years and this proved to be the case. 20 salmon were reported during the week with the best salmon of 22 pounds being landed by former Islamouth ghillie Brian Brogan on the opening day.
Martin Ritchie with the 22 pounds salmon from Islamouth.

This won him the coveted Redford Trophy for the largest opening day fish. 2 other fresh salmon were also landed on the Islamouth beat on the opening day. A few other top quality early run spring salmon were landed during the week. Stobhall had a good opening week landing 4 springers. Tommy Andrew and David Cargill landing 2 cracking salmon on Saturday despite a rising river. Ghillie John Bennett had a 17 pounds beauty on Benchil, John Murray landed a fresh salmon from the famous Pitlochrie pool on Upper Scone and Alum Williams had the first salmon from Lower Redgorton. It was also encouraging to see a couple of spring salmon being caught in the upper river at Edradynate and Findynate. Spring salmon have also got up to the Isla with Coupar Grange landing a couple in the week.

January finished off as it started with some superb multi sea winter salmon being landed and conditions remained cold helping the lower river.
The best salmon from the second week was an 18 pounds beauty from Upper Scone caught by Alan McCaig. There were far less Baggots and Rawners this year and a good number of Kelts which meant a successful spawning season.

The month finished off with 38 salmon which was slightly less than 2011 but there was a feeling that more spring salmon are now being caught in January. Could this mean the late runs on the river will eventually come out in the spring in future? Who knows but watch out for January 2013.

Look out 15th January 2013.

Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Salmon Fishing Review 2012.

Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Salmon Fishing Review 2012.

FishTay have reported 6679 Salmon and Grilse for the 2012 fishing season. In terms of the salmon and grilse catch, the 2012 season total shows an 8.3 % increase on 2011 and a 7 % increase on the 5 year average for FishTay beats. Catches reported per month through the season were as follows Jan 38, Feb 97, Mar 280, Apr 310, May 474, Jun 578, Jul 810, Aug 904, Sep 1598 and October 1590. The spring period Feb to May, showed a 3.5 % increase on 2011, summer period, Jun to Aug a 1.6 % decrease on 2011, and the autumn period, Sept and Oct, an 18.9 % increase on 2011. Another aspect of the catch was the continuation of larger multi sea winter salmon being caught throughout the Tay system in the 20 to 30 pounds class plus a few over 30.
A superb spring salmon from Newtyle.
To provide some context it has to be said the 2012 salmon rod catch was in fact reasonable although everyone had to work extremely hard to achieve these results plus inclement weather in August did not help matters. The end of the season was heartening with a substantial increase especially in the extension period, which was with a feeling that a real autumn run had not taken place and was reflected by all the big rivers. Fresh salmon were still running the river right up to the last day and the extra 2 weeks gave the local economy a much needed boost. The river can not be complacent about these figures as we expect a lot more and every effort must be made to take the river forward to the levels of the past and put the mighty Tay in its rightful position of being the premiere salmon fishing destination in the world. It should be pointed out there are a number of beats that do not report catches on the FishTay website and the full rod catch for the River Tay in 2012 will be quite a bit higher than shown on the FishTay website.
The 2012 Salmon Season opened on the Tay with great publicity in the press and on television. The various issues and activities appeared on Television, Radio and Press giving the river high exposure.

Some video footage of the Opening Ceremony.

There were opening day events throughout the Tay district with the larger ceremonies taking place at Dunkeld and Kenmore. Steve Lomas, Manager of St Johnstone FC and former Manchester City, West Ham United, Queens Park Rangers and Northern Ireland midfielder, opened the salmon fishing season on the Tay at Dunkeld House in front of a large gathering on Monday. The ceremony was organised by the Dunkeld and Birnam Tourist and Angling Associations and was supported by the Tay District Salmon Fisheries Board marking the start of the 2012 season. MP’s and MSP’s were also in attendance and the event was televised by STV news.

Salmon Fishing Scotland Sea lice killing 'large numbers' of salmon.

Salmon Fishing Scotland Sea lice killing 'large numbers' of salmon.

This article appeared on the BBC news this week and has caused a storm in the Salmon world.

Sea lice killing 'large numbers' of salmon.

The study examined the survival rates of tagged free ranging salmon.

Large numbers of free ranging salmon are being killed by parasitic sea lice in European waters every year, an international study has suggested.

The research involved the release of 280,000 tagged salmon smolts into 10 rivers in Ireland and Norway.

Sea lice were responsible for 39% of deaths among the young fish, according to the study's newly-published results.

Scientists from University of St Andrews' Scottish Oceans Institute worked on the research.

Also involved were the Department of Zoology at the University of Otago in New Zealand; Atlantic Veterinary College at the University of Prince Edward Island in Canada; Inland Fisheries in Ireland; the Institute of Marine Research in Norway; and the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research.

The scientists said natural mortality of wild salmon during their ocean migration could be as high as 90-95%, with deaths caused by a variety of factors including sea lice.

We have learned that parasites are taking a very large share of the catch”

Prof Martin Krkosek University of Otago

The creatures are a naturally occurring parasite.

The pest also affects the salmon farming industry. Its efforts to control sea lice include the introduction of ballan wrasse, a so-called "cleaner-fish" that prey on the pest, to a farm in the Western Isles.

Prof Christopher Todd, of the Scottish Oceans Institute, said it was important that the industry continued to give control measures high priority.

Angling organisations the Association of Salmon Fishery Boards (ASFB) and Rivers and Fisheries Trusts of Scotland (Rafts) said the study confirmed that, in some circumstances, fish farming was having "highly significant impact" on the health of wild salmon.

Fish farmers said there were many possible causes for the loss of wild fish at sea, including seals, fishing and a lack of food.
'Major drivers'

The sea lice research team analysed the rates of survival of salmon when they returned to freshwater as mature adults.

The data analysed included 24 trials carried out between 1996 and 2008 which involved the 280,000 individually tagged smolts that were released into rivers.

In each trial half the fish were treated chemically before their release to protect them from sea lice infection during their first one to two months at sea.

The remainder in each trial were untreated control fish.

A proportion of each group were then recovered as adults on their return to coastal waters a year later.

By comparing the tags recaptured from both the treated and control groups in each trial, the researchers showed that sea lice were responsible for an average 39% of the total mortality losses of salmon at sea.

Prof Martin Krkosek, of the University of Otago and who led the study, said the research was similar to clinical studies in medicine but with fish instead of human patients.

He added: "Usually we think of food, climate, predators and fishing as the major drivers of fish abundance, but we have learned that parasites are taking a very large share of the catch."

In a joint statement, the ASFB and Rafts welcomed the research.

The statement added: "In some circumstances and in some locations, sea lice arising from farmed fish can have a highly significant impact on wild salmon.

"Indeed, over the last 20 years there has been no substantive evidence to counter the hypothesis that sea lice arising from aquaculture cages harm wild salmon."

Scott Landsburgh, chief executive of Scottish Salmon Producers' Organisation, said suggestions that the primary origin of sea lice on wild fish came from farms did not "stand up", adding that the parasite was endemic in the marine environment.

He added: "The consensus amongst the scientific community is that the overwhelming majority of wild salmon, 95% of total populations according to this paper and higher according to other published papers, die at sea - this has nothing to do with salmon farming.

"Major international organisations and projects are in total agreement that the largest problems for the survival of wild salmon are the conditions at sea - this is where further research should be undertaken."
