Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Salmon Fishing Report for the Week ending 25th August 2012.

Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Salmon Fishing Report for the Week ending 25th August 2012.

The catches were much improved last week despite more unsettled conditions, fluctuating levels and dirty water from very heavy rain showers made life difficult. The weather is to continue unsettled but will hopefully not disturb the river too much so we can maintain good sport this week as grilse and top quality summer salmon continuing to run the river in numbers. The quality of salmon remained high with fish up to 24 pounds in weight, this was again encouraging and hopefully will continue with good prospects for the coming week.

Conditions were difficult throughout the week and everyone had to work hard for success. River levels fluctuated during the week from unsettled weather with low pressure dominating. The water levels continue above summer level encouraging salmon to run the river and a strengthening of the run is expected to improve catches further. The river will be settled for the start of the coming week but rain is forecast so hopefully this will not spoil things too much. The quality was again exceptional with lots of sea liced fish caught and more multi sea winter salmon landed. Salmon continue to be caught from top to bottom in the river with others caught and not registered meaning fish are running through rapidly and progressing upstream which encourages everyone.

There were 217 salmon and 9 sea trout reported with the largest salmon of 24 pounds landed on the Murthly 2 beat. Salmon were landed throughout the system from the Lower River to the Upper River.

Beat catches reported
(week ending 25th August)
SALMON & GRILSE: Almondmouth 36, Waulkmill 15, Lower Redgorton 8, Luncarty 3, Upper Redgorton 2, Fishponds 3, Benchil and Pitlochrie 15, Upper Scone 8, Catholes 3, Burnmouth 1, Stobhall 16, Taymount 15, Ballathie 4, Cargill 8, Islamouth 10, Lower and Upper Islamouth 10, Upper Islamouth and Meikleour House 7, Kercock 5, Murthly 2 11, Newtyle 2, Dunkeld House 2, Dalmarnock 5, Dalguise 4, Lower Kinnaird 7, Upper Kinnaird 5, Farleyer Upper 3, Farleyer Lower 2, Keithick Mains 5, Portnacraig Pitlochry 2.
Total: 217 Largest: Murthly 2 24lbs
SEA TROUT: Waulkmill 1, Lower Redgorton 1, Upper Redgorton 1, Catholes 1, Taymount 1, Dunkeld House 1, Lower Aberuthven 2, Keithick Mains 1.
Total: 9 Largest: Waulkmill & Taymount & Keithick Mains 3lbs

On the Lower River 157 salmon were landed. Almondmouth continued to be the dominant lower Tay beat with 36 fish landed over the week. Waulkmill also had a good week with 15 fish. Benchil and Pitlochrie had a reasonable week landing 15 salmon up to 18 pounds. Further upstream Taymount and Stobhall had good weeks considering the conditions. Cargill and Ballathie caught but would like lower river levels to achieve better results. Islamouth had a reasonable week but again would do much better with settled river levels. There is a real feeling if the weather settles down and the river runs at a consistent height the sport will be tremendous, as there seems to be a good run on and this will strengthen over the next few weeks.

The Middle River registered 32. This was a much better week but settled conditions would see better results. Highlight of the week was a magnificent 24 pounds salmon from Murthly 2 beat on Stenton. Kercock had five salmon for the week with Brian Fawcett landing a 7 pounds salmon and also a 4 pounder, Terry Harper caught a 10 pounder ,and Dick Leonard landed 2 salmon weighing 7 pounds and 11 pounds. Dick Leonard is a regular on the Tay for 40 years and has not been keeping well so it was fitting for him to catch this past week. Successful rods on Newtyle included John Wood with a nice fish from the Ferry pool on Tuesday. Up at Dalmarnock Philip Daniels landed a fresh grilse on Friday, which was one of 5 landed throughout the week.

The Upper River produced 23. The increased water levels have helped fish run into the upper reaches and the catches have improved again this week. The Kinnaird beats continue to have success. The upper beat saw
Roy Parker and Chris Parker enjoy catches up to 12 pounds and on the lower beat Ben Clarke landed a lovely salmon fly fishing in the New pool. The Farleyer beats continue their record breaking season.

The Isla registered 5 from Keithick Mains.

The Earn registered 0.

Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Salmon Fishing Prospects for week commencing 27th August 2012.

Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Salmon Fishing Prospects for week commencing 27th August 2012.

The river was reasonably settled for most of last week despite some very heavy rain showers and small rises of water making the river dirty on occasions. The catches were hard earned but overall much better. The salmon and grilse run is strengthening as we now get closer to September and this should give the river a great chance of producing more good sport if we get settled conditions.
Kinnaird looking north.

The weather is to continue unsettled with the chance of heavy rain on Monday and a bit more throughout the week, which hopefully will not unsettle the river too much; hopefully this should give excellent prospects of sport on the river. There might be a chance of a fresh fish anywhere in the river and hopefully the run will strengthen after fresh water to give us even more success. Grilse are now more evident in the system and Multi sea winter salmon continue to be caught, which is very encouraging. The prospect of a large salmon is a real possibility with big fish continuing to be caught over the last few weeks.

As to methods, in settled conditions and warmer river temperatures fishing by any method will be varied to catch the elusive Tay salmon. Fly fishing with a floating line and a sink tip is recommended with smaller tubes or a dressed fly. It is always worth a go with a Sun Ray as well. Spinning from the bank with Devons and Tobies are a good bet. It is even worth a go with a flying C or an upstream Toby as the fish become more active in warmer water.

Finally you are reminded that the Tay's catch and release policy for 2012.
From 1 June to end of Season:
• All hen fish of any size and all cock fish over 10 pounds should be released.
• All coloured and gravid fish to be released.
• No more than one clean fish weighing, where possible, less than 10 pounds should be retained per angler per day.
• Anglers should not use worms in September or October in any part of the district.
Worming in June, July and August
Please adhere to these recommendations and help preserve the long term future of the river and your sport.

To help you follow our guidelines I have included these helpful pointers

How to SAFELY Release a Salmon
“The best method of releasing a salmon is to leave it in the water
and touch nothing but the hook with fingers or pliers. When taking a picture, lift the fish from the water with wet hands, quickly take the picture and return it immediately back to the water.
“Whatever the method, care combined with speed, will give the fish the best chance of survival.”

Currently salmon are taking longer to recover in the warmer water so please give then time before releasing them. Releasing fish from boats in the river is not recommended.

Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Salmon Fishing Report for the Week ending 18th August 2012.

The catches were reasonable last week despite unsettled conditions, three different river rises and very peaty water for several days made life difficult. The weather has now improved thankfully for the start of this coming week and we need that to remain to maintain good sport this week as grilse and top quality summer salmon continuing to run the river in numbers. The quality of salmon remained high with fish up to 33 pounds in weight, this was again encouraging and hopefully will continue with good prospects for the coming week.

There were 162 salmon and 8 sea trout reported with the largest salmon of 33 pounds landed on Lower Redgorton, a 29 pounder from Newtyle and a 27 pounds salmon was reported from Lower Kinnaird. Salmon were landed throughout the system from the Lower River to the Upper River.

Beat catches reported

On the Lower River 116 salmon were landed. Conditions were far from ideal but most of the beats caught throughout the week. Almondmouth landed 20 for their week but will be praying the river levels drop to maintain good sport. Lower Redgorton also had reasonable sport, which included a 33 pounds salmon being landed by David Mustarde on a floating devon. Upper Scone had a good week under the circumstances with Swiss visitors, the Erns having success on most days.

John Millar caught 2 salmon on Pitlochrie and Benchil at the end of the week visiting from Dumfries. Neil Barcocks party from Cumbria also had reasonable success on Luncarty and Catholes. Simon Furniss and Jim Ferries party made the best of Taymount landing 16 throughout the week.
Cargill also made the best of the conditions catching 16 during the week with the highlight of 8 year old Ross Jones catching a 12 pounds beauty.
There is a real feeling if the weather settles down and the river runs at a consistent height the sport will be tremendous, as there seems to be a good run on and this will strengthen over the next few weeks.

The Middle River registered 21. Most beats caught but conditions made life very difficult. Newtyle had a quieter week but did catch a 29 pounds salmon from the Boil on Thursday evening. Brandon Bryant was the successful angler landing the beauty fly fishing from the bank. On Dalmarnock Tom Westacott was amongst the successful rods landing 2 salmon up to 16 pounds.

The Upper River produced 25. This was a better week and with more water in the river catches should be maintained. The Kinnaird beats had a successful week catching on most days.
There was another good salmon landed on the beat estimated at 27 pounds by Jim Coventry under the assistance of Geoff Allan.

There were 149 salmon and 9 sea trout reported with the large salmon of 23 pounds landed on Cargill and Farleyer. Salmon were landed throughout the system from the Lower River to the Upper River.

Beat catches reported
(week ending 11th August)
SALMON & GRILSE: Almondmouth 34, Waulkmill 3, Lower Redgorton 10, Luncarty 3, Fishponds 5, Benchil and Pitlochrie 5, Upper Scone 3, Stobhall 11, Taymount 6, Ballathie 13, Cargill 8, Islamouth 5, Lower and Upper Islamouth 7, Upper Islamouth and Meikleour House 1, Kercock 7, Murthly 2 5, Newtyle 5, Dunkeld House 3, Dalmarnock 1, Dalguise 1, Lower Kinnaird 5, Farleyer Upper 2, Farleyer Lower 3, Keithick Mains 2, Portnacraig Pitlochry 1.

SEA TROUT: Waulkmill 1, Luncarty 1, Upper Redgorton 1, Fishponds 2, Stobhall 2, Taymount 1, Murthly 2 1.
Total: 9 Largest: Stobhall 4lbs

On the Lower River 113 salmon were landed. Despite a reasonable total salmon were hard to come by on the lower river with the exception of Almondmouth where 34 fish were landed throughout the week up to 22 pounds. At the start of the week unsettled weather brought the river up and left a dark peaty stain, which took most of the week to clear. This has now cleared and we saw better catches at the end of the week with more fish showing as they ran through the beats. All the beats reported success but with a great deal of effort. On Pitlochrie and Benchil visiting anglers Tom Lumley and Gordon Hyslop had success at the end of the week.
On Cargill Richard Penrose caught a lovely 23 pounds salmon from the Pot Shot. There is a real feeling if the weather settles down and the river runs at a consistent height the sport will be tremendous, as there seems to be a good run on and this will strengthen over the next few weeks.

The Middle River registered 22. On Kercock 5 salmon were landed on Monday with
Jim Lamb catching one at 8 pounds and also 14 year old Matthew Kaye landing his first ever salmon, a 4 pounds grilse. Well done Matthew. On Newtyle the fly was responsible for some success. Mike McDermott caught his first Tay salmon fly fishing from the Steps and
George Ewings achieved the same in the Boil. Well done to you both and haste ye back!

The Upper River produced 12. The river has dropped curtailing sport on the upper areas but more rain will help them this week. Salmon were caught but in much reduced numbers. The current count at the Pitlochry Ladder is over 4200.

The Isla registered 2 salmon all from Keithick Mains.

Dalmore distillery have created a unique expression of their single malt whisky and a generous donation from each bottle sold will be gifted to the Tay Foundation to support their work to protect and improve the river.

Many thanks for all the pictures everyone is sending of salmon and thanks to all who have sent me their individual fishing experiences on the river. I would be most grateful if you would continue to do the same by emailing robert.salmonfishing@googlemail.com to be included in this report.

Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Salmon Fishing Prospects for week commencing 13th August 2012.

Salmon Fishing Scotland River Tay Salmon Fishing Prospects for week commencing 13th August 2012.

The river was unsettled for most of the early part of last week with extremely peaty water but was much better at the end of the week and now for the start of this coming week. The catches were hard earned but reasonable overall. The salmon and grilse run is strengthening as we get into August and this should give the river a great chance of producing more good sport. If the weather remains settled the river will see it’s true potential.

The Tay in Perthshire, Scotland currently offers outstanding salmon fishing with good availability. See what is possible by watching this video.

The weather is to be more unsettled with the chance rain throughout the week, which hopefully will not unsettle the river too much, and this should give excellent prospects of sport on the river.

Releasing fish from boats in the river is no recommended.

If you have any news or pictures of catches or experiences on the Tay and you would like to share them please email me on robert.salmonfishing@googlemail.com to be included in this report.
